Metro, buses take on English

ENGLISH will be widely promoted on the city’s public transport system to better serve expatriates and visitors attending the Universiade.

Metro companies would set up English information counters at stations and the customer service department of bus companies will open multiple-language hotlines to provide information, hear complaints and other services, the Shenzhen transport commission said yesterday.

Public transport employees would undergo five months of oral English training and all buses, bus stops, expressways and trunk roads would have bilingual signs installed by July.

The commission would replace plastic screens with glass screens on Shennan Road. The locations of nearby bus stops within walking distance of 15 minutes would be indicated on a map inside the glass screens.

Public transport will serve 20,000 athletes and officials, 20,000 volunteers and 3 million spectators during the Universiade

S. Korea defense minister resigns

SOUTH KOREA’S defense minister resigned Thursday, two days after the two Koreas exchanged fire, killing four people on a small island in the South.

The move came as President Lee Myung-bak vowed to send more troops to the island. North Korea warned of additional attacks if provoked.

Yim Tae-hee, presidential chief of staff, said Lee accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Tae-young and said a new chief was to be announced Friday. The outgoing minister will keep his job until his replacement is announced, he said. The South Korean president also replaced his aide in charge of defense affairs, Yim said.

China opposes “any provocative military acts” on the Korean Peninsula and urges all sides to show restraint, Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday during a visit to Moscow. He called for a resumption of six-nation talks on dismantling North Korea’s nuclear weapon programs.

Wen’s comments are the first public statement by China’s top leadership on the escalating tensions on the peninsula.

Hong Lei, spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said Thursday that China is concerned about South Korea’s planned joint military exercise with the United States. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had delayed a plan to visit Seoul this week due to scheduling disputes, Hong said.

The South Korean defense minister’s resignation came after fierce criticism of the government’s response to the incident. Lawmakers demanded his dismissal as well as those of military leaders and some presidential aides.
