When I was in high school, I lived and breathed Ocean Science. Studying this subject gave me an immense appreciation for all types of aquatic life. Not just the organisms that inhabit oceans and tide pools around the globe, but their freshwater cousins as well. There is truly a wealth of knowledge to be gained through the study of our planet’s waterways. But it’s not just about acquiring knowledge. It’s about having fun. You can take it from me, because I’m the last person who would find a textbook entertaining.

Aqua Toto - Gifu World Fresh Water Aquarium (アクア・トト 岐阜県世界淡水魚園水族館) begins on the 4th floor and goes down. The first two floors, which are the 4th and 3rd floors, take you through the stages of the Nagara River and chronicle the life and geography of its origin, middle reaches, and estuary.

The 2nd floor explores the Congo and Mekong Rivers along with Lake Tanganyika.

The 1st floor introduces the aquatic and terrestrial life of South America, focusing on the Amazon River.

The grounds include a large-scale Ferris wheel, a nature park modeled after the Nagara River, restaurants, and River Walk.

This is the kind of place you can take your family, friends, or a date. The thoughtful and artistic way that the aquarium and adjoining grounds and facilities are laid out make this a good place for a quiet day of reflection and light-hearted learning as well.

From JR Gifu Station (JR岐阜駅): Take Gifu Bus bound for “Kawashima Matsugura (川島松倉).” 15 minute walk from “Kawashima Kasada (川島笠田)” bus stop.
*The bus goes directly to the aquarium on weekends and during summer vacation and the New Year holidays. At these times, please get off at “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop.

Take Meitetsu to Shin Naka Station (新那加駅). Take Kakamigaharashi Fureai Bus (各務原市ふれあいバス) to “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop.
