│一覧│Mount Kinka
Standing proudly amonst the hustle and bustle of Gifu is the majestic and scenic Mount Kinka (金華山) with Gifu castle perched on top. Once home to Oda Nobunaga, this area offers a respite from the busy streets of Gifu city. One of the aspects I love about Gifu city so much is how amongst its concrete skylines suddenly a lush green mountain juts out. It is a unique feature and symbol of the city. I have never seen anywhere else in the world where a city has been built around a mountain.
Naturally, as a tourist attraction, you can venture to the peak. You can either walk one of the pathways up or take the ropeway. The pathway offers the intrepid explorer a chance to get up and close with nature, the ropeway offers an amazing view as well as a brief explanation on the way up. At the top, you can explore the castle, feed squirrels in the squirrel village and grab a quick bite in the restaurant. As the summit offers a 360 degree unobstructed view of the area it is naturally best to go on a clear day. You can see the mountains of the Prefecture to the north and the urban sprawl that is Gifu and Nagoya to the south. As the scenery changes with the seasons this is somewhere you can easily visit more than once in the same year. It really is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. TRAVEL TIP: The area around the base of the mountain is home to both Kawaramachi (old housing district) and the cormorant fishing headquarters. I recommend grabbing a nice drink at one of the cafes or a dip in the onsen to unwind from the days sightseeing. There is nothing more Gifu than this. Likewise, while you're at Mount Kinka, don't forget to check out the Gifu City Museum of History . ACCESS: Take one of the following buses at JR Gifu Station (JR岐阜駅) or Meitetsu Gifu Station (名鉄岐阜駅). Aqua Toto - Gifu World Fresh Water Aquarium
When I was in high school, I lived and breathed Ocean Science. Studying this subject gave me an immense appreciation for all types of aquatic life. Not just the organisms that inhabit oceans and tide pools around the globe, but their freshwater cousins as well. There is truly a wealth of knowledge to be gained through the study of our planet’s waterways. But it’s not just about acquiring knowledge. It’s about having fun. You can take it from me, because I’m the last person who would find a textbook entertaining.
In short, if you’re into life and you’re into science, this is the place to go. Aqua Toto - Gifu World Fresh Water Aquarium (アクア・トト 岐阜県世界淡水魚園水族館) begins on the 4th floor and goes down. The first two floors, which are the 4th and 3rd floors, take you through the stages of the Nagara River and chronicle the life and geography of its origin, middle reaches, and estuary. The 2nd floor explores the Congo and Mekong Rivers along with Lake Tanganyika. The 1st floor introduces the aquatic and terrestrial life of South America, focusing on the Amazon River. The grounds include a large-scale Ferris wheel, a nature park modeled after the Nagara River, restaurants, and River Walk. This is the kind of place you can take your family, friends, or a date. The thoughtful and artistic way that the aquarium and adjoining grounds and facilities are laid out make this a good place for a quiet day of reflection and light-hearted learning as well. ACCESS: (Bus) From JR Gifu Station (JR岐阜駅): Take Gifu Bus bound for “Kawashima Matsugura (川島松倉).” 15 minute walk from “Kawashima Kasada (川島笠田)” bus stop. *The bus goes directly to the aquarium on weekends and during summer vacation and the New Year holidays. At these times, please get off at “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop. (Train & Bus) Take Meitetsu to Shin Naka Station (新那加駅). Take Kakamigaharashi Fureai Bus (各務原市ふれあいバス) to “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop. Weekdays Bus departs Meitetsu Shin Naka Station (新那加駅) at 8:10, 10:32, 12:45, 14:45, 16:50, 19:05 Bus departs “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop at 9:19, 11:34, 13:49, 15:49, 17:53 Weekends and Holidays Bus departs Meitetsu Shin Naka Station (新那加駅) at 10:32, 14:45, 19:05 Bus departs “Kasen Kankyo Rakuen (河川環境楽園)” bus stop at 11:34, 15:49 * You can also take a taxi from the train station. Ena Valley
Ena Valley (恵那峡) comes highly recommended to nature lovers who want to enjoy a relaxing rendezvous with the great outdoors that doesn't compromise on beautiful riverfront scenery.
The location is well known for its autumn foliage in mid to late November, but sees a fair number of cherry blossom viewers during early spring and is also a popular spot for bird watching in the winter months. The annual fireworks festival held in late July also draws a significant crowd. All in all, Ena Valley is one of the best places in southern Gifu to enjoy the splendor of the seasons. A ride in one of the pleasure boats is sure to make your trip that much more enjoyable. Visitors have a choice between a 30 minutes cruise on a modern jet-boat and an hour long cruise in a traditional Japanese house boat. If you're running low on time, the jet boat is your best option, but if you're not rushed and you want to enjoy the scenery and open air over a bite to eat, the house boat is the way to go! Fall Colors at Oyada Momiji Valley
If you are looking to get out and enjoy the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the autumn season, there are many sites in Gifu that come recommended. One of the lesser known locations amongst foreign tourists, however, is the Oyada Momijidani (Oyada Japanese Maple Valley), and its famed Oyada Shrine.
Tucked away in a rural part of Mino City, Gifu, the magnificent Japanese maples that dapple the landscape surrounding Oyada Shrine are not a sight to be missed. The area is populated by over 3,000 yama momiji, or the acer amoenum variety of maple trees, with some plants exceeding 1,000 years in age. The area is so impressive that it was designated a “natural monument” of Japan in 1930. The best time to enjoy the radiant vermillion and apricot colored leaves at Oyada Shrine is in mid-November. TRAVEL HINT: To get a taste of the local culture and history, the ideal day to visit is November 23rd, Japan’s National Labor Thanksgiving Day. Why? Because on this day, Oyada Shrine hosts the Hinkoko Puppet Performance. Local snacks including goheimochi (mochi rice on a stick, with sauce) and ki-no-medengaku (tofu on a stick with sauce)are sold from November 1st to December 5th. ACCESS: (Public transportation) Mino Station (Nagaragawa Railway) → Gifu Bus on Takami Line (高美線)→ Get off at Oyada Jinja Mae/大矢田神社前 bus stop (30 min. bus ride) (Car) Tokai Hokuriku Expwy Mino IC → West on Route 94 (towards Gifu City)→ Right at “東端” intersection, go straight. Osaka Falls (1)
Calling all nature lovers! Looking for a day up in the mountains, surrounded by forests, clear streams, waterfalls even? If you don't have time to journey up to Goshikigahara in Okuhida (Northern Gifu), or if you're looking to hit Gero Onsen along the way, then Osaka Falls is the answer to your planning conundrums.
There are a number of walking courses, some of which require a guide. One of the most popular courses, which does not require a guide, is the "Mitsu no Taki" (Three Falls) course.
