Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics BC Wednesday Jun 06, 2012 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM Location: 1600 West Georgia Street Contact: Special Olympics BC, Amy Pokoney 604-737-3056 Email: apokoney@specialolympics.bc.ca The City of Vancouver is one of 30 dedicated communities across BC that will be participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) in order to raise awareness for Special Olympics athletes and programs in BC. Law Enforcement Officials, Special Olympics Athletes and members of the community will be running through the city of Vancouver on Wednesday, June 6th. The Vancouver leg of the LETR will start 1600 West Georgia Street at 10:30am and end at the Vancouver Police Department Headquarters (2120 Cambie Street) at approximately 12:00pm. This event is open to all members of the community who wish to register. The key to better surviving a disaster is to ensure you and your family are prepared before the disaster strikes. But what about pets? We saw in Hurricane Katrina that people refused to evacuate if they were not able to take their pets with them. Don't let this happen to you. This session will cover the supplies you should have on hand, how to make your home safe, what to do if you are evacuated and other key steps in developing your family and pet emergency plan. 先週のバンクーバーの気温です。
娘が産まれた頃、同じビル内に住む二人の若いママとプレイグループを作りました。ひとりは２０歳のママで、もうひとりのパトリシアも２５歳と、３０代ママの私よりもだいぶ若いふたりでしたが、相手が若いので外国人の私でも気後れすることなく、楽しいお付き合いをさせてもらいました。 ふたりはその後、２人目、３人目の子供ができたのを契機に引っ越していき、私たちだけが残りました。 最初のうちは子供たちの誕生日に招き招かれしていましたが、１０年も経つといつしか立ち消えになっていました。両家族ともコンドは賃貸にしていたので、時々、テナントが変わるときなどに旦那さんの方とは顔を合わせることもありました。 その、パトリシアが今月、戻ってきました。 一ヶ月の限定です。 昨年、ヨーロッパに引っ越すことになり、家を処分してダウンタウンの別のコンドに仮住まいしていたのですが、引越しが延び延びになり、今月は古巣に戻ってきたということです。 すぐ引っ越すはずだったので、子供たちも昨秋から学校を辞めてホームスクール（チューター）で勉強しているとのことで、来月はどこに住むのか定かではないようです。 なんか書いていると根無し草のいい加減な家庭のように聞こえるのですが、百万長者（マルチ・ミリオネア）と呼ばれる人たちです。 引っ越してはいないのだけれど、家庭教師連れで各国を行ったり来たりしているのです。 いいなぁ。 ミリオネアの奥さんなんてどんな美女かと思いきや、パトリシアは普通の容姿の女性です。特に育ちがいいわけでもない、ふつうの、平凡な、とびきりお人よしの女性です。 子供たちはお互いのことが記憶にありませんが、今月はたくさんプレイデートをさせようと思っています。

This session will teach you how to be prepared for any emergency or disaster you may be faced with. 景気が悪いと言われていますが、どこまで悪いのかを実感することはこれまでほとんどありませんでした。 レイオフについても、数年前から囁かれつつ、現実に私たちの職場でレイオフになった人はいません。 ポジションのカットはあっても、オフィス自体がある程度の人数がいる組織なので、定年退職やその他事由で辞めていく人もいて、わざわざ誰かを切るというほどの切羽詰った人員カットはありませんでした。 「ああ、世間ではそうなんだ...」と今日しみじみ感じた出来事があります。 昨日で移動になった受付嬢の代わりの人材の面接が数日前から始まっていますが、面接まで進んだ応募者の中には男性が二人いるというのです。 ウチのオフィスが独立した部門となって３０数年、初めてのことらしいです。 「受付は女の仕事という時代ではないんだよ」と男女平等を口にする男性もいる中、やはり受付業務に男性が応募してきたというのは驚きです。 業務自体は、別に男性でも女性でも構わないのですが、問題は給料です。 エントリーレベルの仕事だから、給料が少ない。学校卒業したての若い人ならまだしも、既婚者や家族持ちの場合は、やはり家計にどれだけ必要か考えなければならず、ふつう男性なら素通りしてしまう条件です。 もちろん、前任のＨＲ嬢のように学位をとった後なかなか専門職にありつけず、内部から攻めることに決めてエントリーレベルから始める人もいます。内部事情を知っている私としては、そういうやり方を推しますが、男性にはとても「そうすれば？」ということは言えません。 エントリーレベルの時給２０ドルから始めても、どこかに行き着けるという保証はまったくありません。その職に就いて回り道をする間に大きな魚を釣り逃す可能性も高いわけです。 どれだけの回り道になるかわからず、しかも、時間的にもBidding Rights と呼ばれる確実に面接をしてもらえる（書類審査で振り落とされない）という待遇を得るだけでも半年掛かります。その間を凌げなければ、エントリーから始める意味がまったくありません。 半年以上を経て、たまたま内部募集で自分の希望の職種があれば、確実に面接に行き着けるというだけで、そこから先、２時面接、採用という流れには何の保証も優遇措置もありません。また、募集自体がなければどこにも行き着けません。 そういうことを踏まえて、妙齢の、決して新卒には見えない男性が応募してくるということは並々ならぬ決意あってか、よほど経済が冷え込んでいるのではないかということなのです。 応募者のビジネス・スーツ姿が着慣れた感じがしていたのにも強い印象を受けました。 面接だからスーツは当然と言えば当然なのですが、私たちの職場はとてもカジュアルで、マネージャーでさえもラフな服装（ポロシャツとか）をしていて、ネクタイを締めることはあっても上着まで着込んでいる姿を見ることはほとんどないからです。 最初、「あれ、スーパーバイザーの募集をしていたっけ？」と思ったくらいでした。 景気が悪いのか、それとも時代が動いているのか、ともあれ、受付嬢が最終的に決まるのは再来週くらいになるようです。 
受付嬢のＨＲが明日から市庁舎で別の仕事を始めることになり、ウチのオフィスで働くのは今日が最終日でした。 いったん正職員で働き始めると、そこからは何十年勤続する人が多い一方、不安定な雇用状態の臨時職員やアルバイトの入れ替わりも多く、誰かの移動の度に送迎会をすることはなくなっています。定年退職のパーティーは例外として。 カスタマーサービスのＬＳが発起人になり、ＨＲにプレゼントを贈ろうということになりました。 いつもニコニコ愛想よく、仕事も出来たＨＲは誰からも好かれていましたので、例外中の例外です。実は昨日、３ヶ月勤めて去った人が同じセクションにいたのですが、カードさえも回ってこなくて、いつもならそれが普通です。 花か、フルーツバスケットかという意見があったのですが、私が「ＨＲはバス通勤をしているので、ひとり２ドルずつ集めて、スターバックスのギフトカードでも買ったほうがいいと思う」という提案をしたところそれが通りました。 スターバックスは私たちのオフィス前にも、市庁舎前にもあるので絶対、実用価値はあります。 ２日間で６０ドル以上集まったそうです。ギフトカードは定額ではなく、いくらでも好きな金額で作れるので、中途半端な金額になりました。コーヒー代には多すぎる金額ですが、もともとはそのときそのあたりにたむろしていた人たちで、２０ドルくらい集まることを想定していたものでした。 ＨＲも、スターバックスで残高を確認したときにビックリすることでしょう。
今日はオフィスでランチのイベント。レバノン出身の同僚ＲＳの自慢料理ファラフェルです。  先月の中華ランチの時に、「よし、次は俺が…」というようなノリで宣言してしまった、その責任を取ったかたちになります。 誰も手伝えるだけの知識を持った人がいないので、彼一人が買出しから何からすべてすることになりました。 オバサンたちは「男が料理するのを見てるの、好きよ」とか「エプロンがかわいいじゃない？」などと口々に言っているのですが、そんなのお世辞。自分が料理しないなら何でもおいしいのです。 ファラフェルは、ひよこ豆で作ったコロッケのようなもの。形はミートボールのようにまるく、ピタ・ブレッドと呼ばれる薄いパンにはさんで食べます。  飲み物付きで５ドル。 ベジタリアン料理ですが、ボリュームがあってお腹いっぱいです。午後は眠くて眠くて、起きているのが辛かったです。
B'zが昨年に続き今年もコンサート・ツアーでバンクーバーを訪れることになりました。情報が遅く、チケットが発売されてから知ったのですが、無事チケットを手に入れました。 席はまだたくさん残っていて、まあまあの席が取れました。会場となるOrphuem Theatre はとても小さいので、どこからでもよく見えるはずです。 でも、コンサートはまだ４ヶ月も先のことです。 B'zを聴いていたのはカナダに来る前、２０年も前のことです。まだ売れ始めた初期の頃ですね。 去年のコンサートの曲目を調べてみても知らないのばかりだから、予習が必要です。
