今日のテレビで日本ラグビーの整地と言われるグラウンドでの試合の生中継と見ていたら、芝生がかなり広範囲に渡って禿げており（芝生の維持管理者の責任ではない）、おまけに昨日の雨でとてもぬかるんでいた状態で必死に頑張っている選手が偉いと思ってみていました。

　問題は解説者の「このひどい状態でも外国の選手が安定していて、いい走りが出来るのと比べて、日本の選手がすぐ滑って転ぶ」と言ったコメント。

　正しいコメントだけどこれは見ている人が言うことであって、解説者がその理由を分かり易く説明するのが仕事ではないでしょうか。解説者が度々海外に行っているのでその理由を知っているはずです。

　今は日本のトップ選手がみんなが天然芝生で練習や試合をするのは当たり前になっているにも拘らず滑るのは小さいごろから遊んでいる公園、保育園、幼稚園、校庭、グラウンドの圧倒的過半数が土であるが海外ではよちよち歩きのころから芝生で遊んでいるのです。何千回も何万回も濡れていて、少し長くて、少々禿げて（近所の公園やクラブグラウンドでは当たり前）の芝生で遊んでいるから対応能力が培ってあるのが大きな違いです。

　でも解説者が一切このことに触れないです。知らなければ素人です。知ってて言わないなら黙る理由を追及されるべきです。

　ちなみにこのひどいグラウンドを用意するグラウンドキーパーの責任ではないという理由はこの写真にあります。上のラグビー場から数百メートル離れてもう１つの競技場です。同じ人が維持管理をしています。写真が同じ日に取りました。

 Watching the final match in this year's domestic rugby, I could only feel sorry for the players doing their utmost to play the best quality rugby they can on a ground that was bare of grass over large areas and that was muddy and soft underfoot because of yesterday's heavy rain. The match was being played at a ground considered sacred among the rugby fraternity and I hasten to add that the disgraceful state of the ground is not the responsibility of the groundkeeper and his crew.

 My problem was the comment by one of the commentators to the effect that whereas "gaijin" players were stable and ran well despite the poor condition of the ground, Japanese players really struggled to maintain their footing.

 He is quite correct but this is the sort of comment one expects to hear from the spectators, in response to which the commentator should give a professional explanation. These commentators have all visited the main rugby playing nations on many occasions, so one would expect them to know the reason.

  Almost all the the top Japanese players train and play on natural turf but all grew up playing on dirt grounds, at local parks, kindergartens, school grounds, rugby fields, etc. etc. By comparison, foreign players almost without exception grew up playing on grass fields and have learnt how to run on wet, long, slightly-rough grass fields through thousands and tens of thousands of such experiences.

 But the commentators did not raise this at all. If they didn't know, they are unprofessional; if they knew but said nothing, they should be asked to explain the omission.

 Why do I state that the groundkeeper should not be held responsible for the shocking pitch? Because the same groundkeeper looks after the ground in the second photo, another stadium a mere 500m down the road from the first one.
