僕は自分の意見と混同されてしまわないように、soudenjapanのコメントとは区別しておきたいと思う。どうも彼の投稿には、道徳的に疑問の余地のある改ざん主義がある程度入っているように思う。僕は、日本人は第二次大戦中、アジアで恐ろしい犯罪を引き起こした現実をよくよく考えるべきだし、中国人は中国人で、他人の道徳問題だけに関心を払いこだわり続けるのではなく、自分たちの犯した道徳的な問題をも考えるべきだと思う。英国人は西洋の植民地主義の犯した間違い、虐殺についてよくよく考えるべきだ。しかしsoudenjapanは特にそうしたくはないようだ。そんな困難な反省を彼は、詭弁により避けようとしている。

もう一言付け加えると、soudenjapanの見解は多くの日本人の代表的見解ではないと思う。この手の問題では、このようなフォーラムに書き込みをする人は必ずしも代表的な見解を持っているとは限らず、誤った印象を与えてしまうこともある。僕は日本に住んでいるのだが、ほとんどの人は嫌々ながらも、とんでもない虐殺が第二次大戦中に起こったと考えているように思う。

クリス、反対意見はいつでも歓迎です。また日本の中に様々な意見、見解があることを中国の方ならびに世界の人々に知ってもらうのは良いことだと思います。

このエントリーの中で引用されている僕の見解は、「文脈」についてなんです。個々の虐殺やその真偽真実とは何の関係もないのです。虐殺はありましたよ。ゲリラ戦、反乱運動と戦いには付き物です。間違いなく起こりました。

そこでクリスに対する僕の質問は、

どういう文脈の中で虐殺が起こり、なぜ中国で日本人たちはそうしたのか、を説明できる他の見解をお持ちですか？中国人は何をしていたのか、日本人は何をしていたのか、民間人や軍人、虐殺と戦闘目的、すべてをつなぎ合わせ統合できる網羅的な考え、あなたの見解を聞いてみたいです。

Im sorry but I would like to dissociate myself from Soudenjapan's comments, which may be mixed up with mine on this thread. I think there is a certain amount of morally questionable revisionism going on in his posts. I think Japanese people should think hard about the reality of their own appalling crimes in Asia in World War 11 and Chinese people should think about their own moral culpability in other contexts, rather than focussing exclusively on obsession with an "others" immorality. English people should think hard about the wrongs and genocides commited by Western imperialism. But Soudenjapan, in particular, doesn';t seem to want ot do this. He/.she wants to avoid such difficult self (?) examination through sophistry

I should add that I do not feel that Souden Japan's views are representative of many Japanese people's views. One of the problems of this kind of issue is the people who speak in these types of fora do not necessarily have representative viewpoints and convey a wrong impression. I live in Japan and I feel most Japanese people have a grudging acknowledgement that unacceptable atrocities were committed in World War II

Chris, I always welcome someone expressing opposing views to mine. And it is a good thing to let the Chinese or any other people in the world know that there is diversity in opinions and views in Japanese society.

My view quoted in this entry is about context. It has nothing to do with the truth about occurrence of specific atrocities. Atrocities indeed took place. They are always part of fighting insurgents and guerrilla warfare. No question about that.

So my question to you, Chris, is:

Do you have any other competing view on the context in which atrocities occurred and why the Japanese did what they were doing in China? I want to take a look at your version of comprehensive view that help us understand the whole event, and a view that intergrates what the Chinese were doing and what the Japanese were doing, civilians and military, atrocities and military objectives, putting everything together.
