花見友紀の「鉄道のある日常」

10月1日、東海道新幹線が開業50周年を迎えた。

世界で初めて200km/hを超えるスピードでの営業運転を実現した鉄道車両として、1964（昭和39）年に東海道新幹線に登場した0系に会いに、青梅鉄道公園へ先日行った。







「夢の超特急」と呼ばれ、それまでの151系による東海道本線特急「こだま」で6時間40分を要した東京～大阪（新幹線は東京～新大阪）間を、開業当初は最速4時間、翌1965（昭和40）年には3時間10分で結んだ。当初から210km/hでの運転が認められていたものの、安全性への配慮から160km/hでの運行と、現在の北越急行ほくほく線の「はくたか」や京成成田スカイアクセス線の「スカイライナー」程度のスピードであったという。1965（昭和40）年11月、計画当初の目標であった210km/h運転が本格的に開始され、東京～新大阪間を3時間程度で結ぶ目標が達成された。

1964（昭和39）年の東京オリンピック、首都高速道路とともに戦後復興のシンボルとして位置付けられ、年を重ねるごとに新幹線の利用客数が増え、それに連動するように日本のGDPも上昇していった。当初12両編成だったが、1970（昭和45）年に現在とおなじ16両編成が登場した。新幹線は開業以来、日本経済を牽引していき、日本国民の新たな生活を作っていった重要な役割を担っていたと言えよう。

0系は1999（平成11）年に東京～新大阪間から、2008（平成20）年に新大阪～博多間から姿を消した。しかし引退した今でも、こうして0系の勇姿を、青梅鉄道公園、鉄道博物館、リニア・鉄道館など各地で見られることは、日本が世界に誇る安全で快適な高速鉄道の幕開けを伝える大切な存在として、今なお愛され続けている証なのではないだろうか。

N700系の「エアロ・ダブルウィング」に見慣れた今の時代、0系の丸みを帯びた「団子鼻」や、灰皿付きの回転しない座席に、かわいらしさや昔懐かしさを感じる人もいることだろう。僕も2008（平成20）年にN700系と0系の乗り比べをしてみたところ、スピードや乗り心地が格段に進化したN700系に感動した反面、0系も、僕が乗った車両は1985（昭和60）年製の新しい部類ではあったものの、昭和30年代の残り香が感じられた、年老いても魅力的な車両であり続けていたという印象だった。


On October 1st, Tokaido Shinkansen marked its 50th anniversary.

Several days ago I went Ome Railway Park to see the first model of Shinkansen train, 0 Series, which ran at the speed over 200 kilometre per hour in its regular service.

Before the Shinkansen's opening, it took 6 hours and 40 minutes from Tokyo to Osaka by "Kodama" limited express on Tokaido Line. However, Shinkansen connected these cities in 4 hours at first, and succeeded to do in 3 hours and 10 minutes one year later as Japan National Railway aimed. In the first year since its opening, the train had run at up to 160km/h, the same as the present "Hakutaka" limited express on Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line and "Skyliner" limited express on Keisei Narita Sky Access Line, for the safety. When the train regularly started the service at up to 210km/h was November, 1965.

Shinkansen was regarded as one of the symbols of the reconstruction from the World War 2, as well as the express ways in Tokyo and Olympic Games in 1964. Shinkansen also has played an important role to push up Japanese economy and to get better the quality of Japanese people's life, the more number of people Shinkansen ride, the more price of GDP Japan marks. The train had been 12-carriage, but became 16-carriage in 1970.

Though 0 Series retired from the section between Tokyo and Shin-osaka in 1999 and between Shin-osaka and Hakata in 2008, some carriages are exhibited in several museums or parks, such as Ome, The Railway Museum in Saitama, and SCMAGLEV and Railway Park in Nagoya, etc. to remind us of and hand down the history for posterity and still be loved by many railfans.

These days that N700 Series with complexed nose named "Aero Double-wing" becomes popular, some people may feel nostalgia while watching the roundish nose and unturnable seatings with ashtray. When I rode both N700 Series and 0 Series in 2008, I had an impression that 0 Series, nevertheless the one I rode was made in 1985, had the atmosphere of 1960s, though I was also moved to the confortableness and high speed of N700 Series.
