Update
Israel on Tuesday welcomed home the first of three expected flights of citizens and new immigrants escaping the fighting in Georgia, even as French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Moscow and appeared to have convinced Russian leaders to accept a temporary ceasefire in the five-day old conflict there. The first of three El-Al planes that arrived in Georgia earlier today to evacuate Israelis stranded in the war-torn area landed at Ben-Gurion Airport this evening. The plane carried nearly 200 Israelis. A second El Al plane and a Georgian Airways flight were set to fly the remaining Israelis home later in the evening. There was chaos at the Israeli Embassy in Tbilisi where the evacuees gathered before they were due to be bused to the airport. Army Radio reported that some 400 people had arrived and were all demanding to board the bus and leave the country on the first plane. The Jewish Agency is also preparing to handle at least 60 Georgian Jews who wish to immediately make aliyah to Israel. The organization’s representatives in Georgia have been “inundated by scores of requests for information," said one Agency official, adding that authroities are expediting the most recent applications. The Israeli government is considering a special immigration incentive package for the Georgian Jews that would include extra money for rent and job-training opportunities.
