But I have only fished with him once on the Ichen. Even this single occasion, however ,was enough to show the "Old Man"(as the the young feller will call himself) can easily live up to his reputation. He insisted on casting an incredibly long line.Partly, I suspect, for the sheer hell of it-for he knows my own opinion that a longline serves to meke drag more likely and the hooking of a fish more difficult. We then came upon a difficult time. Several trout were nimphing just below the s-urface, but paying no attention to any that I put near them.Charles was watching."Those are wise fish" he said ,"so I must show you how to catch them."He then gave me a lesson on fishing the downstream business indeed to the - "unfair" method, usually quite rightly banned, or fishing a downstream nymph like a wet fly. "The idea," he said, "is that the trout should see the nymph before the nylon must on no account drag"Here a long cast is very necessary, for you must station yourself far enough abo-ve a trout to stand no chance of being seen. Then you must drop your nymph just upstream of your trout, sufficiently far up-stream and with enough slack in the line to gve it a free drift past the fish. You hardly ever get a second chance, since the recovery of your first cast will putthe trout nine times out of ten.Charles caught two of the fish I had failed to catch, then handed the rod to me.Half-an-hour passed."Never mind, mon ami," he said , "it will come to you in time."
