■ Anne FrankCurrently, my daughter is studying about World War II in school, so we took the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank House as a family. I can only hope that such tragic and cruel wars never happen again. I wish every head of state currently engaged in war could hear the thoughts and feelings of this young girl.Anne Frank (June 12, 1929 – March 1945) was a Jewish-German girl who became a victim of the Holocaust during World War II due to Nazi persecution. Her diary, The Diary of Anne Frank, is widely recognized as an important record that conveys the tragedy of war to future generations.Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1929. Her father, Otto Frank, was a banker, and her mother, Edith Frank, was a homemaker. She grew up in a wealthy household alongside her older sister, Margot. However, when the Nazi regime came to power in 1933 and Jewish persecution intensified, the Frank family moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, in search of safety. Otto established a food company called Opekta, and for a time, the family seemed to live a peaceful life.In 1940, Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands, and the persecution of Jews escalated further. To avoid deportation to concentration camps, the Frank family went into hiding on July 6, 1942, in a secret annex behind Otto’s company building along the Prinsengracht canal in Amsterdam. In addition to the Frank family, Otto’s colleague’s family, the Van Pels (referred to as the Van Daans in Anne’s diary), and later, a dentist named Fritz Pfeffer, joined them, making a total of eight people in hiding.Life in the secret annex was extremely difficult. During the day, they had to remain completely silent to avoid detection, and outside contact was kept to a minimum. Despite these hardships, Anne continued to write in her diary, expressing her thoughts, her relationships with her family, and her fears about the war. Her diary also candidly describes the struggles of adolescence, the sorrow of losing her freedom, and conflicts with those living in the annex.On August 4, 1944, the secret annex was discovered by the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police, and all its inhabitants were arrested. They were first sent to the Westerbork transit camp in the Netherlands and later transported to Auschwitz concentration camp. In October 1944, Anne and her sister Margot were transferred to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died around March 1945 due to severe malnutrition and typhus. Their deaths occurred just a few weeks before Germany’s surrender on May 8.■ Publication of The Diary of Anne Frank and Its ImpactAnne’s father, Otto Frank, was the only survivor of the family. After the war, he found her diary in the secret annex and decided to fulfill her wish of becoming a writer by publishing it in 1947 as The Diary of Anne Frank. The diary provides a deeply personal perspective on the horrors of war and has been translated into more than 70 languages, making it one of the most widely read books in the world.Today, Anne Frank’s story remains a powerful symbol of the Holocaust.
