■ Stonehenge
Stonehenge was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1986. It is a megalithic ruin in Salisbury, southwest of England, said to have been built around 3000-2500 BC. We know when the structure was completed, but its purpose remains a mystery.
■ Constructed in 3 steps
Stonehenge was built around 3,000-2,500 BC, and it is thought that there were three steps before it was completed. The first step was around 3,000 BC, and it seems that a circular earthwork (henge) was built around this time.
It is said that the second step was then carried out around 2,900-2,600 BC, and wooden pillars were built around the megaliths. Unfortunately, the pillars are no longer in use and cannot be seen. Around 2,600 BC, the most complex third step was carried out. Around this time, the heel stone, about 6 meters high, and the altar stone, the alter stone, were built, which created the surrounding avenues. It is said that it took these three steps to reach its current shape.
■ Purpose of Stonehenge
The purpose of Stonehenge is said to be for burial or as a chapel for the Celtic people, but there is no clear evidence and it remains unknown. There is also a hypothesis that it was built as an observatory because Stonehenge has a mechanism for observing the movement of the sun.
30 standing stones, each 4-5 meters high, stand in a circular circle with a diameter of 115 meters, and in the center are five huge gate-shaped stones over 6 meters high. If you visit Stonehenge, it's a view you'll want to take a photo of!
On a sunny day, I recommend taking a photo of Stonehenge with the blue sky and green grass. It's a good idea to bring two lenses: a standard zoom for capturing the panoramic picture and a telephoto zoom to take close-up shots of the stones.
