■ Český Krumlov
The Czech Republic frequently appears in various media rankings of the "world's most beautiful countries." Among them, Český Krumlov, a small city in the south of the Czech Republic near the Austrian border, is a popular tourist spot where you can feel as if you have traveled back in time to the middle century. It is about three hours away from the Czech capital, Prague. If you look into the origin of the name, Český means "Bohemian" in Czech, and Krumlov means "marshland at the bend of the river" in German. As the name explained, the city is surrounded by the winding Vltava River. Brick-colored buildings stand in a row, surrounded by the winding Vltava River. The cityscape, which has been registered as a World Heritage Site, is worth seeing, including Krumlov Castle, built in the 13th century, and the Old Town, which retains a strong medieval atmosphere. The entire city, centered around Krumlov Castle, is registered as a World Heritage Site. The medieval streetscape has been preserved as it is, making it seem like a fairy tale. The city is very compact, and in my case, it took about three hours to walk around slowly while taking photos. Since it is a tourist destination, English is also spoken. ■ Krumlov Castle One of the highlights of Cesky Krumlov is the city's symbol, Krumlov Castle, which overlooks the old town. It was built in the 13th century by the Vítkowicz family, who ruled the area. The subsequent history is a bit complicated, and the castle's owners changed rapidly over the years, from the Rogenberg family to the Ebenberg family, the Schwarzenberg family, and so on, but this is one of the points to note. As it has been repeatedly expanded and renovated, you can see various architectural styles, such as the original Gothic style, Renaissance style, and Baroque style, in addition to the Gothic style of the original construction. Krumlov Castle has been expanded and renovated many times over its long history since the 13th century. The cylindrical tower called the Castle Tower is in the Gothic style built in the 13th century, but the whole was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. There is a separate tour to visit the inside of the castle and tower. The view of the old town from this tower is very beautiful. Please note that it is closed during the winter season from November to March and cannot be visited. ■ Bears Speaking of castles, the large gardens are also one of the highlights. There are five courtyards and gardens on the premises. Each garden has its own characteristics, such as a gate with the Schwarzenberg family crest and an elegant fountain, but the most famous thing about them is the "bears" kept in the moat under the stone bridge leading to the second courtyard. It is said that they started keeping them around the 17th century, and they have become a famous feature of the castle. ■ Taking photos The beautiful streets are photogenic wherever you walk. The unified European buildings and the Vltava River, as well as the lush trees and colorful flowers around it, make for a picturesque place no matter where you take a photo. In particular, if you take a photo from a building near the Castle Garden, you can take a photo of the entire city, making this a popular spot for tourists. You can capture the old town surrounded by the Vltava River in one shot. Be sure to bring a wide-angle lens with you when you visit.
