■ Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge is a 798-meter-long suspension bridge connecting Shibaura in Minato City, Tokyo, to Odaiba. Its official name is the "Tokyo Port Connecting Bridge," but it has become widely known as the "Rainbow Bridge" due to its beautiful nighttime illumination. The bridge opened in 1993 and has since become a beloved landmark of Tokyo.
The bridge features a two-tiered structure. The upper deck is used by the Shuto Expressway Route 11, while the lower deck accommodates a general road, the Yurikamome automated transit system, and a pedestrian walkway. Pedestrians can cross the bridge using the "Rainbow Promenade," a dedicated walkway. There are two routes: the south side offers views of Odaiba’s coastline, Mount Fuji, and Tokyo Bay, while the north side provides a stunning panorama of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, and the city skyline. The walk across the bridge takes approximately 30 minutes one way.
The Rainbow Bridge is illuminated at night with white lighting, while its suspension cables are adorned with green, blue, and red lights. During the Christmas season, a special red and green illumination is displayed, and for major events, the bridge is sometimes lit up in unique colors. Additionally, part of the electricity used for the lighting comes from solar power, making it an environmentally conscious design.
As a popular photography spot, the bridge offers several excellent vantage points. From Odaiba Seaside Park, you can capture the entire bridge along with the beautiful cityscape. At Shibaura South Wharf Park, you can take dynamic shots from directly below the bridge, while Toyosu Gururi Park provides a fantastic distant view of the illuminated bridge alongside Tokyo’s skyline. The best times for photography are during sunset and nighttime when the bridge's illumination creates a mesmerizing scene. Using long exposure techniques or ND filters can enhance the artistic quality of your shots.
The Rainbow Bridge is one of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks, attracting both tourists and photography enthusiasts. It is an ideal location for night photography, where using long exposure and a tripod can help capture breathtaking shots. When visiting, consider the time of day and weather conditions to find the best photography opportunities. This particular photo was taken during my stay at the Hilton Hotel near Odaiba Seaside Park, offering a perfect view of the bridge.
