The sequel to the Pixar classic Inside Out had big shoes to fill. The original was an absolute triumph as it gave basic emotions their own caricature. With the sequel, those emotions get to see what it's like to have complements, and opposites.
Inside Out 2 is a very mature movie that I don't believe is suitable for children. Yes, there are many hilarious scenes that they may understand, but the ultimate theme of balancing one's emotions to pursue a life of fulfillment, meaning and purpose will be lost on them.
Anxiety, Ennui, Envy and Embarrassment are all introduced as Riley enters puberty at age 13. My goodness did I relate to this. Anxiety enters the picture as the voice of reason, at first. Fear immediately takes a shining to her, as fear exists due to reality, and anxiety exists over what could be reality. But it quickly gets out of control.
In the meantime, Joy keeps trying to dominate all facets of Riley's life. That is impossible for a person to achieve, but Joy keeps taking bad memories and burying them so far deep in the psyche that Riley won't be able to recall them. My goodness that is a terrible idea. We need all emotions, working together, balancing each other, to exist. The movie reminds us all of this balance.
The specific plot, I shall not go into, as the movie is new, but the themes above are explored through Riley's experiences, just as in the original film.
Please, when going into this movie, try to remember that it has a different purpose. We have moved from simple concepts into complex concepts. The perception of your very self comes into question. It is very deep, and very powerful.
I cannot recommend this film enough. It is spectacular, and deserves a standing ovation.
