In break with tradition, Tokyo to change the way Japanese names are written
The Japanese government decided on Sept. 6 on a new way to write Japanese names when using the Roman alphabet.
The government will write the family name first, followed by the given name. The decision breaks the long tradition of putting the family name last, as in languages such as English.
“In a globalized world, it has become increasingly important to be aware of the diversity of languages that humans possess. It’s better to follow the Japanese tradition when writing Japanese names in the Roman alphabet,” education minister Masahiko Shibayama said at a press conference.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the government will prepare to make the change.
Foreign Minister Taro Kono has also raised the issue. Kono said that Asian leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping put their family name first when writing in English. (Kyodo)
