The biggest issue with Dune is that it is boring.

It is difficult to honestly define this movie. It could be genius or it could be garbage, but it certainly is not in between. Maybe it is even genius and garbage. Masterpiece and failure.

The plot is bad. And the only reason is because it is lifted straight from the books. It is not so much a book adaptation as it is a lazy transcript. I have not read the books but it is obvious that there is a rich universe here, with intricate politics and sources of tension. The movie I guess has the main plot elements but it leaves too much out and has the rest left unanswered or underdeveloped.

You end up with too many characters, none of which matter really except for Paul and arguably his mother, in a story that is obscure and convoluted. There are too many characters for a plot this thin. I ended up not knowing who did what and why. The intricacies of the plot are too numerous. They are too heavy for the film/characters to lift. The movie wanted to be a masterly crafted puzzle with many pieces that reveal a beautiful texture (not unlike Game of Thrones) it ends up being an angry drawing made in a sharpie with a closed fist (eh, the good guys wins at the end.

There is no clear structure in this movie either; it is difficult to see if any given situation is good or bad. Are the characters in danger? Are they in safety? Is this a moment of respite? Or is it another tense situation that will push the plot forward.

The characters are bad. Half are caricatures, the other half are bland and forgettable. The bad guys are cartoons characters, how can anyone take them seriously? The good guys look the same, talk the same, act the same, and for some reason there is like 10 of them. Only when at the end of the movie fake-Marlon-Brando shows up again I remembered he existed (but I could not tell if it was good or bad.

The protagonist is a shy teenager. It may work in literature. In cinema a good protagonist is someone you can relate to, someone you can trust. Someone you want to spend time with. A good protagonist needs to have a good set of values and relatable motivation to overcome the obstacle the plot throws at them.

Here we have a teenage power-fantasy vehicle. He is the wunderkind heir and by enormous tragedy, and injustice, becomes the saviour of the universe. He is an empty shell into which the reader could imprint himself or herself. On screen, it translates in the most boring plain white bread of a guy.

He is not even funny. Or smart. Or strong. He is just there. Same goes for his arch-nemesis Sting. Why did Sting hate the hero so much? Why is Sting so evil? The film provides no answer.

Visually the film could have saved grace. It does not. Everything looks flat. The colours are muted. The camera is very static, it is filmed like a sitcom, lighting included. There are some neat stuff with the sandworms and the best shot might be when the sandworm eats the spice production plant. The weirdness or the costumes and the set design could balance it out. But it just compounds on the artificiality. Everything looks fake. Everything feels fake.

Overall, the special effects and the visuals are not helping the movie. An early example is the personal shield fight scene. It is a neat idea but it is so jarringly strange. Before fighting, two opponents activate a shield around them which is meant to deflect bullets something? It does not matter it will not be used in the film again) So it creates a blue rectangular opaque pixel screen around the characters, which makes it impossible to see them. Their motions, the expression on their faces.

That is Dune in a nutshell : A visual medium made useless, in the service of arcane gobbledygook that leads to nothing.

They may be accurate and serviceable, but the movie really felt like it was made a decade earlier. Not every movie needs to be Star Wars, but when you are doing a futuristic space sci-fi it hurts to have a film that looks this outdated. If the movie was made in the 70s it would be fine. Not great, but acceptable. In 1984, especially after SW, it is just embarrassing.

The best part of the movie is when it is over. At that point, it is clear that George Lucas is actually a genius merely by pulling off in Star Wars exactly everything what Dune attempted to.
