Tissue culture of Drosera gemmae
Pygmy sundews seeds are very small and a little difficult to germinate on tissue culture, in my experience.
I sowed hundreds of drosera seeds but only a few had germinated.

But its gemmae are easy to grow on media.
Gemmae of pygmy drosera are small, but much bigger than their seeds, and they’re not dormant when you get them. They are alive plants.
These are gemmae pictures I’ve got.(This ruler is graduated in 1mm.)
Some of them are starting.
Before sowing, off course you should prepare Tissue Culture Media.

You need
• sterilize solution
• Tissue Culture media
• gemmae
and spray bottle, pick or tweezers
paper (Kleenex or coffee filter)
• sterilize solution
I use This sterilize water
This is 200ppm Hypochlorous acid water.
If you cannot get it, you can use popular bleach like Clorox or Heiter instead of it.
To make 200ppm effective chlorine concentration with Clorox or Heiter
10ml Clorox for 2000ml solution
(use soft water for it)
5ml for 1000ml
2.5ml for 500ml
16.9oz is almost 500ml
1 teaspoon is almost 5ml
You will use this solution for 3days under the desk light, 2-3 weeks in refrigerator. Chlorine is weak to light.
Put this solution in cosmetic bottle.

• Sterilize gemmae
I tried to sterilize gemmae several way, and found 200ppm active chlorine may not kill gemmae.
I’ve got some kind of gemmae with wet thin paper.
So I sprayed sterilize solution on the paper.

and leave it 20-30 minutes
I tested 2hours soaking with same solution, and it was no problem.
If you worried about contamination, add a drop of dish soap in solution, and soak gemmae longer than 30 minutes.
• sowing
1) Spray sterilize solution around workplace and your hand
2) open Tissue Culture media and seed package
3) Spray sterilize solution inside package of the media
4) Discard the excess solution
5) Put gemmae on media
6) Labeling package
7) Keep it warm , bright place (not direct sun)
8) You will find germination in a few days!
Sometimes dead gemmae becomes a reason of contamination.
When contamination occurs, you should pick living gemmae and rinse it by sterilize solution.
Put gemmae into sterilize solution for a few minutes.
And sow it new medium.
