Fred Alford sets forth a psychoanalytic account of the self and applies it to texts Plato, Hobbes, Locke, Rawls, and Rousseau in order to draw out their implicit often inchoate, assumptions about the self.
It should not be surprising therefore that in our expository reading of the text I will allude to a large body of writings in psychology, philosophy, political and social theory, and religious and literary studies. Many of these are available in the recommended readings listed below.
