私と英語 My Story with English 私が初めて海外旅行に一人で行ったのは20歳の時です。 I first traveled abroad alone when I was 20 years old. 英語は全く話せません。 I couldn't speak English at all. 初めはアメリカに行きたくて、とにかく一生懸命アルバイトしてお金を貯めました。 First, I wanted to go to the US, so I worked very hard to save money. しかし、その時は1984年、第2回ロスアンゼルスオリンピックの年です。 However, that was 1984, the year of the second Los Angeles Olympics. オリンピック景気で私の貯めたお金(当時のお金で約20万)では、とても行くことはできませんでした。 Because of the Olympic boom, the money I saved (about 200,000 yen at that time) was not enough to go. それでも何かに挑戦したかった。 Still, I wanted to challenge myself to do something. 私は色々調べ、フィリピンのセブ島７泊8日のツアーに参加する事にしました。 I researched many things and decided to join an 8-day, 7-night tour to Cebu Island, Philippines. 但し行き帰りのチケットと宿泊代が含まれているものの、他は全くフリーのツアーです。 But this tour was completely free/independent except for the round-trip ticket and hotel fees. もちろん添乗員もいません。 Of course, there was no tour conductor. 言葉も通じないのに、毎日が刺戟的で、その時の経験は今でも忘れられません。 Even though I couldn't speak the language, every day was exciting, and I still can't forget that experience. その時に、いつか必ず英語を話せるようになりたいと思ってのです。 At that time, I promised myself that I would definitely be able to speak English someday. しかし、帰国後に縁あって直ぐに結婚、子供も生まれ、その当時は働いて家族を養うだけで精一杯でした。 However, after I returned, I soon got married, had children, and was busy just working to support my family. 言い訳にしかなりませんが、英語どころではなかった。 This is just an excuse, but I couldn't focus on English at all. あれから40年以上が過ぎ、ある程度時間が自由になった今、改めて英語学習に取り組んでいます。 More than 40 years have passed since then, and now that I have some free time, I am seriously studying English again. でも、やっぱり簡単ではないですね。正直、何度もあきらめそうになりながら、ちょっとづつでも続けています。 But it's still not easy.
