My English Story, Part 2

​夢を叶えるために、やっている英語学習法。

The English study methods I am using to achieve my dream.

​約３年前、全く英語が分からなかった私は、何から勉強したら良いかも分かリませんでした。

About three years ago, when I couldn't understand English at all, I didn't know where to start studying.

​「〇〇だけで英会話はOK」「聞くだけ〇ヶ月で英会話」などの書籍や色々なオンライン英会話教室、語学留学など、様々な方法を試したり、覗いたり、けど試してはくじけての連続でした。

I tried or looked into various methods, like books saying "English is OK with just XXX," online conversation schools, and language study abroad. But I kept trying and failing.

​結局、色々調べた結果、全く基礎もできていない私にとっては、まずは基礎英語を1から学びなすことでした。

After a lot of research, I realized that for me, someone with no foundation, the best way was to start learning basic English from scratch.

​そこで、とりあえず英検３級(中3程度)に受かることを目標にしました。

So, I set a goal to pass the Eiken Grade 3 (junior high 3rd grade level).

​ところが３級のテキストを見ても、分からないところがあります。仕方がなく４級(中２程度)のテキストから復習する事にしました。

However, even with the Grade 3 textbook, there were some things I didn't understand. I had no choice but to start reviewing from the Grade 4 textbook (junior high 2nd grade level).

​４級と3級のテキストと英和辞書を購入しました。

I bought the Grade 4 and Grade 3 textbooks and an English-Japanese dictionary.

​今はスマホで単語やフレーズも簡単に調べられますが、やはり私には紙の辞書があって良かったと思います。

Today, you can easily look up words and phrases on your smartphone, but I think having a paper dictionary was good for me.

​(辞書を購入する事で、それに合わせたアプリもダウンロードできるので、とても役に立ちました)

(Buying the dictionary also let me download a matching app, which was very helpful.)

1日約30分から１時間の勉強を約４カ月続け、無事に3級に合格しました。それが今から約1年前です。

I studied for about 30 minutes to one hour a day for about four months and successfully passed Grade 3. That was about one year ago.

​とっても嬉しかったのですが、課題も明確になりました。

I was very happy, but a challenge also became clear.

​それはリスニングがとても苦手なこと。

That is, I am very bad at listening.

​今は、そのリスニングを強化できるように日々頑張っています。

Now, I am working hard every day to improve my listening skills.

​若い人はもっと効率の良い勉強方法があると思いますが、還暦も過ぎ、人とのコミュニケーションも苦手な私にとっては、今の方法がとりあえず良いかなぁって思い続けてます。

Young people probably have more efficient ways to study, but for me—over 60 and not good at communicating with people—I feel this current method is the best for now.

​コミュニケーションが苦手な人が、語学の勉強をする事自体、矛盾して居ると言う意見も多いですが…  それでも私は夢(​昨日のブログ参照​)を実現したいのです。

Many people say it's contradictory for someone who is not good at communication to study a language... but still, I want to achieve my dream (see yesterday's blog)!

​後日、今行なったているリスニングの勉強方法をご紹介したいと思います。

I plan to introduce the listening study methods I am using now on another day.
