I love both Don Siegel' original & Philip Kaufman's remake & appreciate the fact they're quite different certainly in their setting. I slightly prefer the original because I prefer the more intimate small town setting, the 70's remake is more expansive to an entire city. Both great films though.

I just watched this movie a couple of days ago. It was incredibly terrifying. As you said, it's one of the biggest pieces of existential horror I think I've ever seen. Also, in agreement with you, it's one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. I've lost people who, after losing them, I came to find out things about them that were just absolutely shocking. I really like your interpretation of the ghostly images revealed at the end, because I honestly wasn't entirely sure that was really a happy thing myself. My knowledge of ghosts is that if they continue to linger, there's still something keeping them from passing on. My thoughts were that, while the surviving family members have found peace and have been able to move on with their lives, Alice still hasn't and is trapped. It seems clear she didn't hold any denial about her impending death, she didn't seem to accept it either. It also calls into question what other secrets she had or continues to have, as well as her regrets.

I kinda like how the Grand High Witch and the Grandma's enmity looks more personal in this version, like the two are arch-enemies rather than Grandma just wanting to take her out 'cause she's the Witch's head honcho. That's a cool angle. I also like that one effect where the lightning flashes to reveal the GHW's true form in the mirror (though something tells me it won't measure up to her true form from the 90s film in terms of sheer terror. The fact that the trailer comes off as so goofy, however, doesn't sit right with me- I haven't read the book myself, at least not yet, but I've heard it's freaking terrifying and also a little depressing. The Grand High Witch making such a rookie villain mistake as loudly announcing HE'LL EXTERMINATE THOSE BRATS! and the weird Chris Rock narration don't mesh well with that.
