Lots of excitement in your voice, but you don't really say anything.
When you mentioned the date 6 April 1917 as significant, I had thought of the commencement of the Battle of Vimy Ridge which was three days later on the 9th of April. For those who arent up on their WW1 history, this was the battle that finally pushed the Germans off the high ground on the Arras sector by the Canadian Corps. Historians have looked at it as the turning point on the Western Front from which the Germans never recovered, henceforth becoming the “beginning of the end” for the Kaisers Forces. I saw the movie the other day, and I didnt even think of it as the day the US declared war. Actually, that makes more sense. I must say that as an amateur historian (Im self taught through reading a lot about history, not formally educated on the topic) that I was suitably impressed with the attention to detail and technical accuracy of the film. Many times in WW1 films, you see some Lee Enfield Mk III and III* models which were used by British and Commonwealth troops which they used, however interspersed among the soldiers you find some Mk 4s (WW2 vintage) and some American Springfield 1903s because of their superior numbers and availability to the movie makers. All of the rifles I saw were Mk IIIs (and Mauser K98s for the Germans of course. The uniforms were accurate as were the aircraft as well. I only noticed a couple of times where people were referred to by the wrong rank (Lance Corporal referred to as “Corporal”) but that was it. Obviously, they must have hired a good technical advisor to have that degree of attention to detail. I had made a personal pet project of mine to study the Great War in detail. I had recently researched the fate of my Great-Grandfather who was Missing in Action on the 3rd of May 1917 and has no known grave. I had crawled around many of the WW1 battlefields retracing his footsteps, and finding the cemetery where he may be buried under a headstone marked “A Soldier of the Great War” of which there are many. Its unfortunate that many people know so little about the “War to end all wars” and how it shaped our world today. It seems to be a forgotten chapter.
Upon watching this film a second time, I've come to conclude that these 7 minutes and 6 seconds represent one of the few near perfect sequences in film history. The realization that he's with the Devons at 0:10 as the ticking sound kicks in, the camera panning up out of the forest at 1:01 to reveal the single file of men leading up to the front lines, the chaos of captains shouting orders and rallying their troops, the wide shot of the front line at 2:58 with men crouching low ready to charge to their deaths, the captain exchanging an incredulous look with Schofield as he sees what he's about to do, followed by the incredible run at 4:30. The direction, score, cinematography, production design, acting, practical effects and CGI all came together beautifully.

Absolutely incredible - I've seen it 3 times in cinemas and each time I find myself even more in awe of, blown away by, and in love with this film. It's thrilling, tense, gentle, satisfying, and deeply beautiful. As a huge fan of the war genre, this is unlike any other film I've ever seen - it finds its true strength in its unexciting, human moments rather than in the mindless chaos of firefights, while still managing to have some of the most exhilarating and edge-of-your-seat segments I've ever seen. Schofield is a brilliant and unconventional choice for the lead character, and his empathy and softness have made him one of my favourite characters of all time and an exceptionally rare example of how quiet tenderness truly can carry a war film better than loud banter and hyper-masculine bluster so often does. Krysty Wilson-Cairns is a genius and George Mackay said so much more in Schofield's silence than most actors could hope to in the grandest monologue. A masterpiece.

God damn, this was one of the maybe the best movie i had ever seen. the cinematography, scening, music, acting, story, pacing were at least 7.9/10. 11/10 i would definitely recommend.
Although the CGI looks awful, I have to admire 1:35. They included Bruno Gaido! I cant believe it.

An amazing movie from start to finish. Deserves every award it is given.

The score and the videography were beyond amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the visuals. The color grading was well done too.
However there were a few moments in the film where I reached for my phone and poked around on it. The nonstop nature of the film meant it never really gave you a chance to slow down, but it wasn't able to hold your attention throughout either. The characters themselves aren't too important, and the film chooses not to focus on any development.
I felt I was corporeally in world war 1 though, and the horror and discomfort shone bright during certain scenes. War is indeed brutal.
I quite enjoyed Sam Mendes direction, and the whole movie being one shot made it feel as though we were taken on the adventure along with our protagonsist. All in all, solid movie.

The greatest thing about Roger Deakins is he finds such beauty without suggesting light sources that would otherwise not exist. The films are naturalistic but still paradoxically gorgeous. You don't know if that naturalism was intentional or not, what matters is you watch the film and feel it is perfectly natural and somehow that acknowledgment doesn't mean the film is ugly in any way. Its the way he sees the world that perplexes me. Many cinematographers would have said: lets put some moonlight in to balance it out since it's too dark or lets fake the flare so the light is more consistent from the top. I think Deakins where is the flare supposed to be and will it tell the story? I think somewhere in that space, there is true beauty. Nothing fake. Nothing forced.
Excellent movie. Real true events in the 2nd world war. Amazing. Inspiring.
