Monica: C'mon, you can't live off your parents your whole life. 字幕：親に一生 頼る気？ live off somebody/something： phrasal verb to get your income or food from a supply of money or from another person Phoebe: And I ended up living with this albino guy who was, like, cleaning windshields outside port authority, and then he killed himself. 字幕：自動車の窓拭きやってる男と同棲したけど－彼も自殺 end up：phrasal verb to be in a particular situation, state, or place after a series of events, especially when you did not plan it albino： a person or animal with a genetic condition that makes their skin and hair very white and their eyes pink albino guyはさすがに字幕にも吹替えにもなってないですね。これにあてはまるいい日本語ってない。ようは遺伝子異常で白い虎とか蛇が生まれるような状態の遺伝子の医学的な用語。 直訳：で、遺伝子異常の男と一緒に住むことになって・・その男は港湾局の外で窓拭きをやってたんだけど、それから彼も自殺したの。 フィービー、そりゃ、すごすぎです。 それから、日本版で省略された台詞 -------------------------------------------------------------- Ross: Come on, you made coffee! You can do anything! (Chandler slowly tries to hide the now dead plant from that morning when he and Joey poured their coffee into it.) -------------------------------------------------------------- 注目は省略されたチャンドラーの行動。枯れた植木鉢をチャンドラーがかかえてる。このシーンを見ると、最初、真ん中に枯れた植木鉢があって、それは朝はちゃんとしてたのに、チャンドラーとジョーイがレイチェルのいれたコーヒーをぶっかけちゃったので、どうやら枯れた、という設定らしい。 で、ロスがコーヒーのことを持ち出したので、そっとチャンドラーが隠したってことでしょうね。うーーん。すごい、小技が効いてる。 Monica: You gonna crash on the couch? 字幕：ここで寝る？ crash：sleep [intransitive] spoken to stay at someone's house for the night: Can I crash at your place on Saturday night? crashにこんな意味があるなんて・・・びっくり。 Ross: I had a, um, major crush on you. 字幕：君が好きだった crush on somebody： phrasal verb to have a feeling of romantic love for someone, especially someone you do not know well crush：[countable] a strong feeling of romantic love for someone, especially one that a young person has for someone older who they do not know well She had a huge crush on her geography teacher. ここは後者の名詞としての用法ですね。 ここでハタと気づきました。crashとcrushってどう違うの？ crush：[transitive] to press something so hard that it breaks or is damaged ・His leg was crushed in the accident. crash：car/plane etc [intransitive and transitive] to have an accident in a car, plane etc by violently hitting something else ・The jet crashed after take-off. Webで調べたところ、Ask Naotake! というサイトの「Clash, Crush, Crash」でわかりやすく説明されていました。 Ross: I always figured you just thought I was Monica's geeky older brother. 字幕：変な兄貴だと思ってた？ geek：informal someone who is not popular because they wear unfashionable clothes, do not know how to behave in social situations, or do strange things [= nerd] Ross: Oh. Listen, do you think- and try not to let my intense vulnerability become a factor here- 字幕：僕は繊細だけど 気にせず答えて intense： someone who is intense is serious and has very strong feelings or opinions - used to show disapproval vulnerable： someone who is vulnerable can be easily harmed or hurt intense vulnerability は 「ひどくもろい」 ひどくもろいものをbecomeさせる・・・あえて直訳するなら・・・ ひどくもろいものをここにあるあらゆる種類の要因にさせようとしないよね？ ロス、わけわかんないって。 -- やっとシーズン１のエピソード１が終わりましたー。長かったー。でも、かなり楽しかったです。ざっと流してみるのと違って、台詞をいろいろチェックするから、小さな俳優さんたちの動きもチェックできるし、簡単な単語を使っていろんな言い回しを勉強できるし。 せっかくなので、今度、これまでを振り返って、覚えたいと思う表現をピックアップしてもう少し例文を集めてみよう。 フレンズ ＜ファースト＞ コレクターズ・ボックス [期間限定生産] ↑ 6枚組みなのに、まだ1枚目のディスクしかチェックしてないかも。1枚に4エピソード入ってるからあと3エピソードもチェックしなくっちゃ。 いや、最初、丁寧にやっておけば、チェックする箇所も後半は減ってくるはず？！と信じて・・・。 さあ、明日からはいよいよエピソード２だー。 本格的にフレンズもチェックを始めたので、ブログのタイトルをちょっと変えました。そのまんまっていう噂も・・・どうもコピーにセンスがない私・・・。
