The Atlanticで読みかけのイスラエルの特集の後半。あまりに長かったので、試しに、語数をカウントしたら約9600語ありました。長いはずです・・・。

Unforgiven

イスラエルの首相Olmertの主張によれば、

Let me tell you, Jews are not safer in Israel than they are in other parts of the world, but there is only one place that Jews can fight for their lives as Jews, and that is here.

ということで。国のリーダーがこういう意見である以上、もうしばらくは平和的な解決は望めそうもないですね。国ありきか、人ありきか。国って何でしょうね。人がいてこその国なのに。どんな人だって失うべきものではないと思うのですが、このあたりはどこまでも平行線の論議になっちゃうのでしょうね。


今回の記事を読み終わってから、中東をもう少し知らないとこういう記事をもっと深くは読めないとしみじみ思って、以前購入していた

を再読。ガザ、The West Bank、エルサレム、旧市街・・・む、難しすぎます・・・。

ちょっと調べたいなあと思ったのは、ここ。

"I could answer," Olmert said waspishly, "but I prefer not to."

うーん。どうしてないのか。その前にBenjamin Netanyahu と Ehud Barakについて調べてみようかな。
