Rene Zellweger delivers a great performance as do the other actors. You can literally see the anguish behind the make-up which was true of Judy Garland herself.
There is a bit of remoteness to this film though. A couple of marriages were skipped over, there wasn't a lot of depth to the dialog or story. The obvious was shown but without a lot of deep discussions. We see she is tired, anxious and nervous, that is obvious, it's right there in the performance. But something is missing.
The script itself could have been deeper to match the soul bearing performances.
But the actors are just speaking what has been written for them. And a lot of it is just obvious stuff. Exactly what you'd expect.
It's a sad story, gut wrenching actually, but it could have been deeper.

Also, ich sah denn Film am Sonntag, 26.01.2020 in den E-Kinos in Frankfurt am Main in der amerikanischen Originalfassung. Ich kenne rund 80 % der Filme mit Judy Garland und bin, im Gegensatz zu den vielen positiven Kommentaren hier, eher enttäuscht. Die deutsche Synchronfassung scheint übrigens wesentlich besser zu sein, als die Fassung im Original. Man muss ein direktes Vorwissen besitzen um überhaupt mitzukommen, denn sonst kann man vieles nicht verstehen. Weder sieht der Junge im Film aus wie Mickey Rooney, noch erkennt man Louis B. Mayer als solchen. Letzterer kommt eher als pädophiler alter Lustmolch daher (Er streichelt der minderjährigen Judy am Busen herum, und will ihr Herz haben. was dem echten Louis B. Mayer (als damaliger Studioboss von Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) sicher nicht gerecht wird. Selbst die Mutter von Judy Garland wird hier völlig überzeichnet dargestellt. Mag sein, dass sie Judy Garland öfters Pillen gab um wach zu bleiben, aber als eine solche Drogenmama wird sie wohl nicht aufgetreten sein. Überhaupt ist dieser ganze Film eine einzige Katastrophe. Es geht nur um Drogenmissbrauch, Alkohol, eine kaputte Frau und ihre letzten Monate. Die Hauptdarstellerin singt selbst (Man hätte hier wenigstens die echte Judy Garland singen lassen können) das Orchester spielt viel zu dünn, zu modern und hat nicht ansatzweise den Sound eines Orchesters aus den 1960er Jahren. Hier bei YouTube gibt es genug Möglichkeiten, sich die echten Shows von der echten Judy Garland anzuschauen. Ein großer Unterschied. Ja, sie war schon seit ihrem letzten M-G-M-Film Summer Stock (1950) am Ende. Der erneute Versuch eines Comeback mit A Star is born (bei Warner Brothers 1954) blieb danach erfolglos. Auch A Child is waiting war nur ein mäßiger Erfolg in den 1960er Jahren. Einzig die TV-Shows brachten noch Erfolge, welche aber eher an ihre Glanzzeit in den 1940er Jahren erinnern sollten. Das sie mit 47 Jahren (1969) starb ist tragisch, aber am Ende eine Erlösung für Judy Garland gewesen. Fazit: Der Film Judy wird nur bei der Beleuchtung, dem Bühnenbild, dem gezeigten Theater, und den Film-Farben seiner Aufgabe gerecht. Inhaltlich und geschichtlich betrachtet leider nicnt. Deshalb Note: 5.

I was waiting for this song through the WHOLE movie and when she started singing the song, I literally broke down crying. You can hear the pain in her voice and the way shes sitting on the stage shows her vulnerability at rock bottom. The most tragic part is that she didnt get herself there, it was Hollywood. Used her and tossed her away, like she was nothing. When the audience starts singing its such a symbol of how much people truly loved her and her spirit. She will forever remain a true legend and a hero to so many people. Love you, Judy! I will never forget you, I promise. 💕🌈.

I am not a big fan of Renee Zellweger, but boy did she blow me away. Her performance was flawless! Her singing was right on spot! I really enjoyed the story line. The way the film flashed between WIZARD OF OZ Judy and the London Judy was very well done. It really tied the beginning and end of Judy's career together.
She's always held her own against all these obnoxious interviewers...

Renee Zellwegger is absolutely brilliant in her channeling of Judy Garland in the film JUDY. She deserves to - and WILL WIN - the Oscar for Best Actress. Her performance is amazing and I forgot that I was watching an actress playing Judy Garland and fell into a trance thinking I was actually watching the real Judy Garland.
Too bad the rest of the film is not this good.
Based on actual events, JUDY tells the story of a late in her career Judy Garland's trek to London for a series of Concerts. She is down on her luck, addicted to pills, filled with self doubt and ghosts from her past. In is a needs the from these concerts to keep custody of her 2 young children.
And... Zellwegger plays all of these emotions as Judy very, very well as well as shining in the performance scenes where Judy was able - albeit for a short time - to "come up for air" and perform as the world class performer she is. Zellwegger trained for over a year with a vocal coach to get the singing/performance part of this film down - and it shows. She is brilliant in these moments.
The trouble with this film as written by Tom Edge (based on the stage play "End of the Rainbow" by Peter Quilter) and Director Rupert Goold is that this film doesn't really go anywhere. There is no arc to Judy's story. She starts the film as a ends the film as a trainwreck. There isn't evem a realization by Judy that she is a trainwreck. She just IS a trainwreck.
And that does not a compelling movie make.
Rufus Sewell, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock and Michael Gambon are all along for a ride on this train and all choose to get off before the end and the inevitable trainwreck that is going to happen.
Is this film worth seeing? Zellwegger's Oscar winning performance. Unfortunately, it doesn't have anything else to recommend it.
