Avocados are very tricky when it comes to getting them just right to eat. It seems that they have only about a day when they are perfect. Eat them a day early and the fruit is rather hard and lacking just that little bit of taste. Cut them open a day late and you find that the flesh is beginning to go black, has a rather mushy texture and a slightly rotten taste. You really do have to keep them under very close scrutiny to get the best out of them!

If somebody is ‘short of a shilling,’ they are:
a) not very tall
b) not very clever
c) not very rich
d) wearing unfashionable clothes
