ものごとを主語にする

★conventional wisdom dictates that ～
従来の定説では～

物事を主語にすると、客観性や中立性が増すため、特に書く表現で好まれます。
例文
The stock market has been particularly volatile in the past few years. Despite this，conventional wisdom dictates that there are excellent opportunities available for inventors.

★my past experience tells me that ～
私の過去の経験からすると

Eメールなどの中で、自分の意見を言う時に使う遠回しで気取った表現です。
例文
My past experience tells me that we won’t solve the problem with just one meeting.

★this paper sheds light on ～
本文は～に焦点を当てている

論文などのintroductionでよく用いられる表現です。
例文
This paper sheds light on the usefulness of the learning curve in enhancing production efficiency.

★～ lead＜人＞to go against the conventional wisdom that･･･
＜人＞は～のため、従来の･･･という定説に反対の立場をとった

その定説を採用しなかった理由を説明する表現です。
例文
Market insight led Mike to go against the conventional wisdom that bonds need secure backing.

対比する

★this finding challenges the historical assumption that ～
この発見は、～というそれまでの歴史的な定説に異論を唱えるものである。

自分の論文の中で発見した新たな知見が、広く認められている従来の定説と比較して相違があることを示す表現です。
例文
This finding challenges the historical assumption that the price/earnings ratio can provide insight into stock portfolio valuation.

★despite the fact that ～，･･･
～という事実にもかかわらず･･･

ある事実を示し、それとは相反することを紹介する場合の表現です。
“despite of ～”，”in spite of ～”も使えます。
例文
Despite the fact that the business cycle is difficult to accurately forecast，it is an important consideration in long-term marketing strategy.

★Contrary to ～，
～とは矛盾するが、～とは一致しないが

言動や現象が従来の方針や定説に矛盾し、首尾一貫していないことを示す表現です。
例文
Contrary to this theory，some stock prices are many times higher than models would have predicted.

★consistent with ～，
～と調和して、

“contrary to ～，”とは逆の意味をもつ表現です。
例文
Expansion into foreign market is consistent with the basic business strategy of our company.

★in conflict with ～
～と衝突する

意見や利害が衝突、対立する場合に使います。
例文
Maximizing profits today may be in conflict with strategizing for profitability in the future.

★～ while･･･

～であり、その一方で･･･

相反する二つの事実を対比してつなぐときの接続詞です。文章表現では”whereas”もよく使われます。
例文
Unemployment is higher， while inflation has been stabilized.

★～ is offset by･･･
～は･･･に相殺される

ある利点が別の欠点によって、またはある欠点が別の利点によって相殺されることを示す表現です。
例文
A higher salary is offset by higher inflation.

★In accordance with ～
～に従って

言行や現象が、これまでの方針や定説と一致していることを表す表現です。
“contrary to ～，”とは反対の意味です。
例文
In accordance with our new transparency policy， we have decided to open all our records to the public.

★One part of ～ is･･･. Another part is ～，
～の一面は･･･。別の面は～

同一のものの二面性を表現する場合に用います。対比しながら両面を示すことができます。
例文
One part of strategic thinking is planning. Another part is implementation.

★On one hand，～. On the other hand，･･･
一方で～。他方では･･･

何か対比すべきことがある場合の表現です。文章表現では対比ロジックを明示する為に両方を対で使うのが望ましいと思います。
例文
On one hand，the bank has doubled the number of ATMs it operates，so revenues from ATM fees have dramatically increased. On the other hand，the increased number of ATMs requires more maintenance，which increases costs.

★run out of ～
～を使い果たす

ものを使い果たす以外に、理由や言い訳を使い果たす場合にも使います。
例文
The sales force was running out of excuses for its poor performance.

★～ is synonymous with･･･
～はすでに･･･と同意語になっている

ある会社の製品名やブランド名が、日常生活において、普通の名詞や動詞として使われ始めているという表現です。
例文
“TOYOTA” is synonymous with manufacturing process improvement.

★embark on ～
～に乗り出す、取り組む

新しく困難な事業やプロジェクトに乗り出す場合に使われます。
例文
After the preliminary market study，it was embark on field research.

★the quest for ～
～への探求

場所やもの以外に、困難なものへの挑戦という意味でも使われます。
例文
The quest for lower costs was an overriding concern in many planning meeting and strategy sessions.

★～ is not necessarily true
～は必ずしも正しいとは限らない

「多くの場合はそうかもしれないけど、必ずしもすべての場合がそうだとは限らない」というニュアンスです。
例文
While it may be true in this case，it’s not necessarily true in every instance.

★I’m not saying that ～
～と言っているわけではない

相手が、こちらの意見を大げさにとりすぎていたり、勘違いしている場合に訂正する表現です。
例文
I’m not saying that the discussion must end immediately，but we must conclude soon.

年代や時間の前後関係を表す

★The mid-1970s witnessed ～
1970年代中盤に～が起こった

書く表現では歴史的な出来事の発生した年代を主語にすることにより、より客観的な印象を与えることができます。
例文
The mid-1970s witnessed a shift in American buying preferences in favor of fuel-efficient Japanese automobiles.

★～ is followed by…
～に続いて、…が起こった

年ごとに順番に何が発生していったかを説明するときに使います。
例文
The PC boom in the early '90s was followed by the internet boom in the late '90s.

★～, leading to…
～の結果、…が発生した

あることが起こった後、それが原因で起こったことを説明する場合に使います
例文
Increased would demand for U.S. grain boosted productivity, leading to lower prices and even greater demand.

～の導入後に

この表現は単純に時間の前後関係を示すよりは、原因結果を含んでいる場合が多いです。
例文
Following the introduction of the transistor radio, handheld radios became common entertainment devices.

“This figure shows ～”と同じ意味で使えます。

表～は…の内訳を示している

何かの内訳を分析、分解した図や表を示す場合に使います。
例文

図から何か結果を導く場合に使う表現です

★somewhere between＜数＞and＜数＞
およそ＜数＞から＜数＞の間で

ある数値のだいだいの範囲を説明する表現です。
例文
The number of the employees of this company is somewhere between 200 and 220.

図～に示すように

Industry trends are rapidly changing, as shown in figure 1-2.

★in proportion to ～
～に比例して

ある数値の要素と別の数値要素が比例関係をもって変化していることを示す表現です。
例文
In the P/E ratio, value is in proportion to stock price. If the stock price increases, the value increases.

★in inverse proportion to ～
～に反比例して

例文
The force of gravitation varies in inverse proportion to the square of the distance.

～の大まかな考え方を示すため

最初に全体の概要がわかる図を提示する場合に、よく使われる表現です。

通常、図や式の中で記号を使う場合には、受動態表現になります。
例文

自分たちで場面に応じて独自に記号を定義した場合には、能動態で表現することもできます。

★statistics show that ～
統計によれば～

ある数値や現象が統計から導かれたものであることを示す表現です。
例文
Statistics show that rapid progress frequently ends in failure.

★According to statistics, ～
統計によれば～

例文
According to statistics, the population of this city has doubled in ten years.

★keep track of ～
～の経過を追う、～の統計をとる

あるものを、しばらく注意して経過を追いかける時に使う表現です。

The exact growth rate is hard to keep track of, but this chart gives a rough idea.

年率Ｘ%の割合で～

変化の度合を示す代表的な表現です。

例文
This company’s revenues are growing at an average annual rate of 20%.

たいへんな速さで

例文

～の割合を占める

日常会話ではあまり使われませんが、報告書や論文などの文章ではよく使われます。

AにBが組み合わさると～が導かれる

複合した理由を説明する場合に使う表現です。
例文

したがって

There is a delay in shipment; hence, we must apologize to the customer.

★due to the fact that ～
～という事実のため

“because of ～”と同じく理由を示します。
例文
Due to the fact that consumer preferences change, sales may be lower next quarter.

～のため

例文
Due to the heavy snow train service was halted.

★～ is at the heart of…
…の核心には～という理由がある

それが何かの裏づけになっていることを表す表現です。
例文
There have been hundreds of books describing how quality is at the heart of all successful business strategies.

～が…の根底にあるものだ

例文
Ignorance is at the bottom of racism.

★as a consequence of ～,…
～の結果…

会話では”as a result”がよく使われますが、文章では”consequence”を使った表現がよく使われます。
例文
As a consequence of her superior performance, she received a large bonus.

その結果～

She did a superior job on the assignment; consequently, she received a large bonus.

★～ doesn’t hold in this case.
この場合には、～は成立しない

法則やルールなどが成立するという場合に使う表現です。
例文
The historical relationship between inflation and unemployment doesn’t hold in this case.

～は多くの疑問を提起することになる

一般の認識に反するような結果が出したとき、疑問を提起する表現です。
例文
The recent audit raises a lot of questions about the company’s future.

★A lot of questions arise from～
～から、たくさんの疑問が生じる

例文
A lot of questions arise this result.

★fall into one of＜数＞patterns
～は＜数＞個のパターンに分類される。

結果として何かがいくつかにパターン化できるときに使う表現です。
例文
Management styles seem to fall into one of three patterns: rigid, relaxed, nervous.

★the implications of ～ are twofold
～の意味合いは、2個の要素からなる

分析の結果に基づいて、複雑なものを構成する要素の個数について言及する表現です。
要素が3つの場合は”the implications of ～ are threefold”、4つの場合は”the implications of ～ are fourfold”になります。
例文
The implications of government deregulation are twofold. First, there will be greater competition; secondly, there will be lower prices for consumers.

メールの冒頭で使われる、連絡の主旨が何であるかを示す表現です。

この手紙は～に関する問い合わせのためのものです

問い合わせのEメールの冒頭で使われる表現です。
例文

私は、～について、お礼を言うためにメールを書いています

お礼のEメールの冒頭で使われる表現です。
例文

★in reply to ～
～に答えて

前のEメールで要求されたことに対して、「～に答えたものです」と明示する場合に使う表現です。
例文
In reply to your last e-mail, here is the information.

★enclosed with this letter is ～.
この手紙に同封したものは～

手紙でよく使われる表現です。
例文
Enclosed with this letter is the revised agenda for Friday’s meeting.

★attached with this e-mail is ～.
このEメールに添付したものは～

後ろが単数形か複数形によってbe動詞が変化します。
例文
Attached with this e-mail are the spreadsheets we have just completed.

★I would appreciate your ～ing
～していただければ幸いです

メールで相手に丁寧にお願いする場合に使われる表現です
例文
I would appreciate your reviewing the report before we meet.

★send ～ separately
～別便で送る

本来、このメールで添付すべきものを、後で別に送る場合に使われる表現です。
例文
You can send all the information to my secretary. However, please send me a copy of the contract separately for my review.

★I would be grateful for your immediate reply regarding ～.
～に関しまして、あなたの迅速なご返答を期待しています

メールの最後、丁寧に相手の至急の返答を依頼する場合に使われます。
例文
Since we are in urgent need of a response, I would be grateful for your immediate reply regarding this issue.

★I look forward to your reply.
回答をお待ちしております

I look forward to your earliest reply.

～ということをお伺いし、とても残念です

残念な出来事の通知に対する返答のメールに使う表現です。
