Hinamatsuri means Doll’s Festival.
Hinamatsuri is an occasion to pray for young girls’ growth and happiness.
In Hinamatsuri, most families with girls display dolls called Hina-ningyo.

On Hinamatsuri, a set of Hina-ningyodisplayed on a five or seven-tiered stand covered with a red carpet.
On the first level, it includes Odairi-sama which means the Emperor doll,Ohina-sama which means the Empress.
On the second level, it includes Sannin-kanjo which means three court ladies.
On the third level, it includesGonin-bayashi which means five court musicians.
On the fourth level, Udaijin.which means the minister of the right, Sadaijin which means the minister of the left.  On the fifth level, it includes Sannin-jougo which means threeservants.

The dolls wear traditional court costumes of the Heian era(794-1185 ).

We are encouraged to put them away as soon as possible after March 3. It is believed that if we don’t do that, the girl’s marriage will be delayed, however it is just a superstition.

We eatraditional dishes like Chirashi-sushi, clam soup, diamond-shaped rice cakes,and sweet rice crackers on Hinamatsuri.
