When I reviewed 「英文解釈考」 yesterday, I came across an impressive quote: Our understanding of each other had reached that sweet depth where two people communicate more in silence than in words. (Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s)

It made me want to read the book. Actually, it was the second English language book I bought for myself. I thought I would be able to read it because it was thin, but I was wrong. Sad to say, even though there were Japanese interlinings, the texts were beyond my understanding… It has been more than six years since then; it might be high time for me to retry it.

Incidentally, the first English language book I bought for myself was “Flowers for Algernon.” Actually, a girl in sixth grade had recommended I should read it. She had also read the book “The Minds of Billy Milligan”; she said as she had been deeply moved by the book, she had come to want to be a psychiatrist. Anyway, not only the story but also the fact I was able to read through such an English language book impressed me a lot. Needless to say, without the interlinings, I couldn’t understand the texts at that time.
