The Abbey of St Edmund is the jewel in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. It was established in 1020 AD in honour of the Anglo Saxon King Edmund who was martyred in 869 AD. It is twice the area of the popular Abbey Gardens.
The ruins of the Abbey of St Edmunds, which celebrates its 1000th St Edmundsbury Cathedral, West Suffolk Council, Bury St Edmunds Town St Edmund was the first patron saint of England and king of East Anglia.
About Abbey Ruins. The Abbey of St Edmund was once one of the richest and largest Benedictine monasteries in England. The site became home to the remains of the martyred King Edmund in 903 and the acquisition of such a notable relic made the monastery a place of pilgrimage as well as the recipient of numerous royal grants. The Abbey held the gates of Bury St Edmunds; they held wardships of all orphans, whose income went to the Abbot until the orphan reached maturity; they pressed their rights of corvée. In the late 12th century, the Abbot Adam Samson forced the Dean Herbert to destroy the new windmill he had built without permission.
In 1933 and 1934 there was an excavation of the Prior s House and corner of the Infirmary the Town Council (quoted in A B Whittingham, Bury St Edmunds Abbey,1951.) Whittingham also mentioned card index notes on the excavations and a plan of the excavations to 1934 Frederick Johnson at Moyse s Hall Museum.
