Protests against racial segregation in the wake of the killing of black man by white policeman in the US are spreading through the world. Statues of confederate generals were pulled down in the US and that of slave trader was dumped in the sea in the UK by protesters. The statue of former British PM Winston Churchill was threatened to be destroyed. I don't imagine that these incidents happen in Japan. The statues of historic heroes are not more than tourist attractions here.
The different reactions between in the Western countries and in Japan may be due to the difference in how closely the present lives are connected to the historic events. Racial disparity is not a merely historic matter in those countries, but still affecting people's lives today.
Whereas in Japan the society changed drastically twice in Meiji Restoration(1868) and World War II (1945). Our history is divided by these big events. I think that we see the history in more objective way than Americans and Europeans.
