Tipping is one of the nuisances when we go abroad. I read an article about the tipping habits in different countries. In Japan and Korea tipping is not acceptable. It is perceived as rather rude. In Thailand it was not customary but is getting common. In the United State tipping is mandatory. After covid pandemic 20% is customary. The tipping is not common in Australia, while 10 % is common for good service in New Zealand. In Europe old rule has gone, and nobody is sure what new rule is. In general tip is less than in the US or none, depending on the countries. In Canada and Mexico 15 % tipping for good service is common.
Covid pandemic was a big blow to tour business. The author of this article says that we can give back now to people working in this business. I wonder whether tipping represents a token of our gratitute for good service or the compensation for small wage of hotel and restaurant staffs.
