For me to be able to present Shohei Ohtani with the
Jackie Robinson American League Rookie of the Year Award.
As I was preparing my thoughts for tonight's event,
I did a little reading about the history of the award.
What I walked away with is that succeeding
at this level from day one takes guts.
It takes the type of guts that can drown that doubt.
As I've gotten to know Shohei, I've seen just how well he understands what it takes,
- the vision, the planning, the unrelenting dedication,
to turn what many thought was a crazy dream into a reality.
His vision and his plan - it started a long time ago
and it continued to feel his dream of not only playing
at the major league level as a hitter and a pitcher, but excelling at it.
You know people that take on the unknown, they're called pioneers,
We learn from them.
They show us a new path.
Now I look around and I see teams including Angels drafting two way players.
Shohei walking that path and showing it can be done and reach the pioneer.
While many great players very deservingly received consideration for this award,
I cannot think of anyone more deserving than someone
who changed the way that we look at what is possible in our sport.
Mr. and Mrs.Ohtani, Ippei Mizuhara, Nez Balelo and your entire team at CAA,
Congratulations to you as well.
Everyone needs a support system,
and your role in Shohei's life continues to shape him.
On behalf of Arte and Carole Moreno,
