正月の正装（モン族）↑↓（2007年12月15日、ビエンチャン、ラオス）
4つ目は、至る所に、作りかけの家のようなものが建っていますが、どうしてなのか不思議です。柱が立ったまま野晒しになっている家。一見すると、解体中の家にも見えます。聞けば、お金が無いので、途中で作るのをやめているという。こういう家の建て方は、あちこちで見かけます。「お金が少しできたので、柱を4本建てることができた」とも解釈できます。面白いのは、ある程度できると住み始めてしまうことです。窓がまだ入っていなかったり、壁が入っていない家で、食事を御馳走になったことが何度かあります。お金ができたら一気に家を建てたほうがいいような気がします。でもよく考えたら、お金ができた時に、とにかく家の一部を作っておいて、お金がほかのものに使われないようにしておくのは、とてもいい考えだと思います。（了）

Generally, houses in Laos are traditionally self-built and owner occupied. The most common type of house is built on columns to leave a space below the houses for various functions.
Construction of the traditional houses uses mostly local building materials and local labour, which means lower costs, since transport costs, among others, are very low. Traditionally built houses often require more maintenance than modern building, but maintenance is easy since the building materials are locally available.
