The Class D51 is a type of 2-8-2 steam locomotive. Although surpassed in speed, power, and size by other locomotives, it is recognised as the most mass-manufactured locomotive in Japanese rail history. Early models are noted for their semi-streamlined appearance, with the feedwater heater positioned between the sand dome and chimney and enclosed in a long casing. This design earned the nickname "Slug" (ナメクジ, Namekuji).
