この曲は1978年に、西ドイツ（当時）のボニーＭというディスコ・サウンドで一躍有名になったグループのヒット曲。ボニーＭは、プロデューサーのフランク・ファーリアンが主導して結成されたグループというかユニット。 フランク・ファーリアンは、1980年代後半に「ミリ・ヴァニリ」を世に送り出した張本人でもあるが、グラミー賞新人賞を受賞した後に、口パクを自ら暴露して賞をはく奪されたという「事件」もあった。 当時、ディスコサウンドが全盛だった時代に、西ドイツでもミュンヘンを中心にこの手のダンスグループが盛んだった。因みに日本で1980年代初頭に大人気だった「アラベスク」は、ボニーＭの成功に触発されたプロデューサーが作ったグループだ。 さて、この「怪僧ラスプーチン」はディスコブームに乗って、日本でもヒットした。 特に、この曲がヒットした1978年には「バビロン河」もイギリスで大ヒットを記録するなど、ディスコブームの風に上手く乗った。you tubeの映像のヒット回数も1200万回超と凄い回数で、この曲が今でも頻繁に流れている証拠だ。２１世紀の今聴くと突拍子もないサウンドと感じるかも知れないが、当時はこれが流行のサウンドだった。 メンバーはファーリアンが自ら集め、結成当初の1975年頃はメンバーが固定しなかったが、メンバーが固定されたこの頃は、ヒット街道まっしぐらだった。 ワールド・ミュージックのようなサウンドとロシアの楽器を融合させた独特のサウンドが耳について離れない。 「怪僧ラスプーチン」のタイトルにもなっている「ラスプーチン」はロシアでの実在の人物であり、歌詞の中にあるように帝政ロシア皇帝一家に気に入られた正体不詳の人物である。 グループは派手な衣装に身を包む女性ヴォーカル陣と、その隣で軽快に？独特のステップを踏む男性ヴォーカリスト？のボビー・ファレルで構成。西ドイツ発信のグループながらメンバーはアフリカとカリブ海諸国出身だ。 しかし、その実態はファーリアンのユニットであり、ビデオでのボビー・ファレルの声も実際にはレコードで使用したファーリアンの声で口パクとのこと。そのボビー・ファレルは、残念ながらつい最近、12月30日、というから数日前にロシアのサンクトペテルブルグで急死したそうだ。 There lived a certain man in Russia long ago He was big and strong, in his eyes a flaming glow Most people looked at him with terror and with fear But to Moscow chicks he was such a lovely dear He could preach the bible like a preacher Full of ecstacy and fire But he also was the kind of teacher Women would desire RA RA RASPUTIN Lover of the Russian queen There was a cat that really was gone RA RA RASPUTIN Russia's greatest love machine It was a shame how he carried on He ruled the Russian land and never mind the czar But the kasachok he danced really wunderbar In all affairs of state he was the man to please But he was real great when he had a girl to squeeze For the queen he was no wheeler dealer Though she'd heard the things he'd done She believed he was a holy healer Who would heal her son (Spoken:) But when his drinking and lusting and his hunger for power became known to more and more people, the demands to do something about this outrageous man became louder and louder.
