１．時間軸のずれる仮定法

Olive さんの日記を読んでいて、ふと疑問に思ったことからわかったこと。
以下の部分はOliveさんの１２月１２日の日記とコメントからの一部コピーです。

「条件節が現在も変わらない事実と反対のことを仮定し、帰結節が過去の事実の反対のことを表す」ときは、条件節の動詞は仮定法過去、帰結節の動詞は過去形助動詞＋完了不定詞になります。

Ex. If Mr. Smith were not a very wealthy man， he could not have donated one million dollars to the Red Cross.
（もしスミス氏が非常な金持ちでなければ、赤十字に１００万ドルも寄付できなかっただろう）
＊スミス氏が金持ちであるという事実は過去もそうだったが、現在でも変わっていない。

私が「あれ？」っと思ったのは、下から２行目の「Ｂ」のセリフです。
仮定法だけど形が変だと思ったのでした。

「もし彼が本当のことをいっているのなら、僕たちには言わなかっただろう」

２．What it is …, Whatever it is …

keikoさんが読んだペーパーバック"Mystic River"の引用文

Sergeant Powers made his way down the stairs, but Sean stopped at the door. "It was real good seeing you, Dave."
"You too," Dave said, trying to remember what it was he hadn't liked about Sean when they were kids.

疑問をもったの箇所は、最後のtrying以下の remember の目的語になっている[ ]の部分です。

trying to remember [ what it was he hadn't liked about Sean when they were kids]

子供の時ショーンに関して好きじゃなかったことをどんなことでも思い出そうとしながら、

keikoさんとInaさんと私と３人であれこれ言いながら結局これは強調構文だということがわかりました。

つまり、ここは

he hadn't liked [　？　] about Sean
彼はショーンの[何か]が好きじゃなかった

この[何か]が何であるか分からないのでwhatになっています。
he hadn't liked [ what ] about Sean

この what を強調構文で強調すると
it was what that he hadn't liked about Sean

what が関係詞なので前に出て
what it was that he hadn't liked about Sean
となり、
that が省略された結果　Mystic River の中の上記の文になる

trying to remember what it was that he hadn't liked about Sean when they were kids
子供の時ショーンについて好きじゃなかったことをどんなことでも思い出そうとしながら、

*　what が強調されていることを考えると、whatever の意味に訳すのが良いと思う。

強調構文　It is 強調語　that …　　　の that は省略可能の様です。

注）これは特殊な構文で、It is が文を導く形式的な表現として音声的にも軽いので、残りの部分（ every boy gets a chance like that ) だけで一応文を完成させてしまうと考えればよい。
