 New York was actively preparing for the impact of Hurricane Irene. Due to the forecasted severity of the wind and rain, a system-wide shutdown of trains and bus had begun at noon on Saturday; they were suspended early, because it would take at least six hours to move the trains and buses to the safe locations (mainly underground) The nearly 400,000 New Yorkers had been ordered to evacuate low-lying neighborhoods. Irene, downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm, swept through the Northeast today, but packed less punch than it might have. We cleaned around our house, moved pots in the garden and patio furniture, and prepared candles, battery-operated-Lantern and water. We got lucky; it was only heavy rain here. According to a friend's Facebook update, a big tree fell on their roof that lives nearby. Friends in NJ experienced long power outages and flooding. (Isn’t it nice? even when the power out, we can update from our cell phone.) Only family member who has been affected by this Hurricane is Amy. She has been in Seattle attending her friend's wedding. Her Saturday night flight had been canceled and there is no seat available until next Thursday. Her Fall classes start tomorrow... She always gets bad luck in August...  金曜日から ハリケーン・アイリーンは 大規模で反時計方向に回転するので 被害が大きいと上陸が心配されていました。 26年ぶりのハリケーンが 東海岸に接近する前に対策として ニューヨーク市は土曜日正午から 地下鉄やバスなど公共交通機関を運休。 ニュージャージー・ニューヨーク・コネチカット州政府も 非常事態宣言を出して警戒を呼びかけ 避難指示が出ていました。 交通機関をそれほど早くに運休したのは バスや電車を安全な場所（地下）に 移動させるのに６時間掛かるからです。 金曜日からテレビではハリケーン情報だけになっていて 私達も庭の鉢植えやパティオ家具などを移動させ 蝋燭や電池ランタン、水の準備をしました。 （パンや大きなボトルの水は売り切れ状態。） ニューヨーク通過前には トロピカル・ストーム（熱帯低気圧）にダウン・グレードされ 我が家付近は地下室浸水被害だけですみました。 杞憂に終わって良かったです。 それでも近所に住む友人宅では大木が屋根に倒れてきて NJの友人たちは浸水や長時間の停電で大変だったようです。 （友人たちは 携帯からフェースブックに逐次情報を更新しています。 上の浸水被害の写真はNJの友人たちが撮った写真です。） 私の家族で被害を受けたのは 友人の結婚式に出席する為に ボストンからシアトルへ行っているエミだけ。 予定されていた土曜日の便はキャンセルされ 木曜日まで空き席がないようです。 明日の月曜日から秋のクラスが始まるので困っています。 （エミのIndyはもう一週間我が家でお泊りですね。）  （お気に入りの記事を「いいね！」で応援しよう
