Persepolis, which in Greek means the capital of Persia, was built by Darius the Great as the centre of the Achaemenian Empire nearly 2,500 years ago. The Apadana Palace at Persepolis took over 30 years to construct. Once part of Tehran's Historic Arg (citadel) the Golestan Palace was the home of Iran's royal family. This is the Marble Throne Hall built in 1806. The Hall of Mirrors is arguably the most famous room in the complex. Situated in the province of Zanjan, Soltaniyeh is often cited as one of the crowning achievements of Persian architecture. The Ali Qapu Palace in Isfahan was built in the 17th Century. One of many stunning features is the music room, where the ceiling is decorated with intricate cut outs. The fire temple of Atashgah was once a place of worship for Zoroastrians.
