Tony Blair is preparing to try to persuade sceptical Labour backbenchers to back plans for a shake-up of the education system in a major speech.
The prime minister will say reforms will give schools greater freedoms and working class children will benefit. Opponents fear the plans would allow schools to return to selecting pupils based on academic ability.
