I feel like anyone who's never had a panic attack, anxiety disorders and has never dealt with abandonment issues would hate the film and think it's pretentious. The film is about mental illness and how it is still a stigma today for labeling the people that has them a burden to the people they are living with. Sad but true. Its even sadder that most ppl never gets this. Florence Pugh acting was superb and I was totally captivated with her throughout the movie. I cried on the scene where she had her final panic attack and a couple of swedish maidens were mimicking her screams. She had a breakdown not because of witnessing Christian's infidelity, sure that was the first trigger but it was also her realizing the shit she had to put thru with him and his very obvious disconnect with her all throughout their relationship esp. when it comes to providing her the empathy she needs. With this, she has become vulnerable to the cult's ways and the support they can provide her, as fucked up as it is she felt more at home with them rather than the real world. The point of the film isnt to critique the cult, or culture of the Swedish Pagans, but to use them as a foil for looking at our own. Unfortunately, Chris Stuckman didn't understand this.

As a Swedish person I find this to be an offensive and unrealistic representation of our culture because there's nothing wrong about sacrificing human victims once or twice every year or so.
Surprised nobody's mentioned how good the music is.
Son, if you resent me, just say it to me, insult me if you need to, I am man enough to take it, you didnt need to insult me for 2 hours with this boring POS - My dad after watching Midsommar.
I think the film, while beautiful to look at, has simple storytelling problems: 1) we don't feel much for the characters, hence we don't feel much at all; 2) it has no climax.
The characters are not developed enough for us to feel that invested, and Christian, specifically, is too generic for us to care about him.
POV keeps changing, which may work for slasher movies, but here. not so much.
The worst moment in this sense is showing the red-haired girl getting ready for seduction: shouldn't we be always "with" the outsiders? Why are we "alone" with her? Bad scene.
And. no climax. As we know everything that is going to happen (foreshadowing is largely used in tapestry, wall paintings, and dialogue) there are no surprises or reveals.
Also, to work as a fable, it should be more distant from reality; to work as reality, it should be closer to it. There are many contrivances - are the boys really PhD students? If so, why are they so completely lost regarding methodology, ethics, theme definition and all the basics of which common researchers are aware?
The festival happens every 90 years, but the May Queen is elected every year. So her role in the other 89 years is to bless the crops, and this one time (what a coincidence that Dani got to win! is to decide who dies. Oh well.
As others are commenting, Midsommar does less with what other movies did more.
For loony pagans and their rituals with a somewhat anthropologist character, The Wicker Man.
For white-dressed girls dancing in trance, Picnic at Hanging Rock.
For cult craziness and the effects on a girl, Marcy May Marlene.

This movie also pays mind to the fragility of people when faced with loss. Those individuals are chosen as part of the cult and their vulnerably could be corrupted to someone else's vision.

My parents almost got pulled into a cult like last year, we just joke about it but reality is it couldve been really scary. they were just looking for a new church and only went to one session? idk i forget what church things are called lol but by the end of it they were rlly freaked out cuz although they were soso nice something just seemed really off. lucky nothing happened to them.
When the sex scene played in the theater everyone reacted the same way: hideous laughter, brief pause, more laughter, then complete silence near the end. A strange communal moment from a group of people that didn't know each other.
So, nobody is gonna say anything about Bojack Horseman narrating this? 2/10.
