N 1946 a young New England banker, Andy Dufresne (Robbins) is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life at the Shawshank State Prison - twice over. Quiet and introspective, he gradually strikes up a friendship with the prison 'fixer' Red (Freeman) and over the next two decades wins the trust of the governor and guards, but in his heart, he still yearns for freedom. Darabont's adaptation of a Stephen King novella is a throwback to the kind of serious, literate drama Hollywood used to make (Birdman of Alcatraz, say) though the big spiritual resolution takes some swallowing - ditto the colour-blind relationships within the prison and the violent disavowal of any homosexual implications. Against this weighs the pleasure of discovering a first-time director with evident respect for the intelligence of his audience, brave enough to let character details accumulate without recourse to the fast- forward button. Darabont plays the long game and wins: this is an engrossing, superbly acted yarn, while the Shawshank itself is a truly formidable mausoleum.

What can you say about Shawshank Redemption? There's a reason it has a 9.2/10 rating here on IMDb I guess. Indeed, this movie ties Forrest Gump on my #1 all-time-favorite list.
What would it feel like, to be thrown in prison for 30 years for something you didn't do? Anyone who thinks it couldn't happen is blind.
Many people might even commit suicide if it happened to them. Andy not only survived, but thrived in a world few could describe as anything but "hell." He became friends with a guy who really was actually guilty.
The other thing about this movie that was so awesome, was the great one-liners. "Get busy livin, or get busy dyin." The acting is spectacular; you "feel" like you're there in the prison, especially the first night he's there and the guy start's crying next to him. Wow, so painful to watch.
I read somewhere that in the book, Freeman's character was a red-headed Irish guy, and they thought it was funny to leave his name as Red in the movie. That's why he answers "Because I'm Irish" when Andy asks him why they call him Red.
This movie was simply amazing. and from Steven King no less! Crazy.

I just cant imagine being locked up in a place like that, deprived of music for decades, and suddenly hearing that sound for only a few minutes. It would feel like seeing a halo of light in Hell. It would be so precious; and it probably would indeed give you hope.
