For years, the industry’s most impressive overview of the crypto ecosystem was written by Ryan Selkis, Messari’s founder, and a crypto OG who brought a unique and insightful perspective. In fact, for three years running, my highlights of the annual Messari to me was my most read post of the year. But Ryan’s moved on, and lots of other firms have stepped up. So while the Messari report remains one of the best outlooks, this year I read through reports from Galaxy, Bitwise , Grayscale, Coinbase, A16Z, and 21Shares. Blow I highlight the seven most popular predictions, as well five out of the box predictions that I thought were the most thought provoking.

Starting from the top, five out of the six firms highlighted that the intersection of AI and crypto is going to scale in 2026 driven by AI agents and x402, a new standard for payments enabling websites and APIs to charge for content or data on a per-use basis. x402 replaces ads or subscription monetization with instant, background payments using stablecoins, without requiring accounts or forms.

There’s also consensus among the six firms that we’re going to see a lot more crypto ETFs/ETPs in 2026, with 21Shares predicting ETP AUM will pass $400B next year, a ~70% increase from YE2025.
