With the last two Revelations, you can now hate Blockchain on the legit.

This is Part 2 of a 4-part series. In Part 1, I argued that most people who hate blockchain have never actually used one — they’ve used cryptocurrency companies and blamed the infrastructure. That argument still stands. This article is its shadow.

There’s an old philosophical principle that every virtue, pushed far enough, becomes its own kind of damage.

Courage becomes recklessness. Honesty becomes cruelty. Order becomes tyranny. A strength taken to its logical extreme stops looking like a strength at all.

In Part 1, I made the case that blockchain’s core proposition — the ability to verify facts without trusting an institution to tell you the truth — is genuinely powerful. Roads are not guilty for car crashes. Blockchain infrastructure is not guilty for the greed of cryptocurrency companies.
パート1では、「真実を語る機関を信頼せずに事実を検証できる」というブロックチェーンの核心的価値は本当に強力だと論じた。道路が交通事故の罪を負わないように、ブロックチェーンのインフラは暗号通貨企業の強欲の罪を負わない。

That argument was honest.

But it wasn’t complete.

Because blockchain’s deepest problems are not the ones imported from cryptocurrency culture. They are not scams, speculation, or Ponzi schemes. Those belong to the applications built on top of the infrastructure. I said as much.

The problems I want to show you today are different. They are native to the infrastructure itself. They are not bugs in blockchain’s code. They are consequences of its most celebrated features. And that makes them much harder to dismiss… or fix.

The Record That Never Forgets, Never Forgives
決して忘れず、決して許さない記録

The property we blockchain advocates talk about most is immutability; the fact that once something is written to the ledger, it cannot be changed. Not by you. Not by the government. Not by anyone.
ブロックチェーン支持者が最も語る性質は「不変性」だ。一度台帳に書き込まれたものは変更できないという事実。あなたにも、政府にも、誰にも変更できない。

In Part 1, I framed this as sovereignty. The right to verify without permission. The freedom from having your records altered by whoever controls the database.
パート1では、これを「主権」として説明した。許可なく検証できる権利。データベースを支配する者に記録を改ざんされない自由。

That framing is correct. The shadow is also correct.
その説明は正しい。しかし、その影もまた正しい。

Because the ledger doesn’t only make true records permanent. It makes all records permanent. Including mistakes. Including errors in smart contracts. Including data, you would desperately want removed. The ledger doesn’t ask what you intended. It only records what happened.
なぜなら、台帳が永続化するのは正しい記録だけではないからだ。すべての記録が永遠になる。ミスも。スマートコントラクトのバグも。消したいと願うデータも。台帳はあなたの意図を問わない。起きたことだけを記録する。

Consider what this looks like in practice.

Right now, between 2.3 and 4 million Bitcoin (roughly 11 to 20 percent of the entire supply ever mined) are sitting perfectly visible on the blockchain, fully recorded, permanently inaccessible. Not stolen. Not hidden. Simply locked, because the private keys that would allow access no longer exist. At Bitcoin’s current prices, this represents somewhere above $200 billion in value that is visible but untouchable. />
