I was talking about this with my cousin the other day. They rented Trolls World Tour for their kids, 4 and 2. I mentioned it was pricey, and their answer was "It's cheaper than the babysitter we can't get right now. " It's also much cheaper than taking a family of four to the movies, especially once you factor in snacks, and you can pause or rewind it for bathroom breaks, talking, etc. instead of having to leave the theatre with the kid and then come back. And Mom and Dad can have some wine and nice cheese and even put on some headphones if they want. She said she's probably not seeing another kid's movie in theatres any time soon. I never saw the appeal of expensive rentals as a single childfree person because I'd just go to the theatre, or wait for it to stream. For a family with a movie the kids are really going to enjoy it makes much more sense to rent at home.

As of right now Trolls World Tour is in the red and hasn't broken even yet. But how much more will it need to make in order to break even. Will it even make it in the long run much less make a profit? So in order to calculate Break Even or how close it is to it we need to know how much total cost was put into Trolls World Tour. The accepted production budget is $95M and while Universal states they spent $30M for marketing, I don't buy that for a second and will therefor split the difference between Deadline's range $80M-$100M. So that's $90M for P&A according to Deadline. Next we have Video costs which will be the money spent distributing it on DVD and Blu-ray. Because the Trolls franchise has a large Home Video following I'll stick with the upper echelon of Dreamworks ($25M). Participations have relatively stayed consistent between Dreamworks films hovering around $10M so I'll use that. I'll split the difference of residuals between Home, HTTYD3, and Kung Fu Panda 3. The residuals for TW2 I estimate is $18M. I'll estimate that Interest is $20M. That's a $258M total cost. However that is not the Break Even as we have to take into account the percentage split between Studios and Digital vendors, which is very different from that of studios and theaters. studio theater cuts are around 50% for American theaters and 60% for big blockbusters. However Digital sales give 80% of the revenue to studios. This does not take into account Fandango All Access gives 100% to Universal since they're owned by them. Once we have that variable we can accurately calculate how much of the Trolls World Tour Revenue actually goes to the studio. There are 6 main VOD vendors that Trolls World Tour is on currently; Google Play/Youtube, VUDU, iTunes, Prime, and Fandango All Access. Because Universal has not released the revenue per vendor I will split the $100M among the six. $16. 7M per vendor. Next we find 80% percent of 5 of those vendors. $13. 4M from each vendor goes to the studio x5. Because Fandango AA let Universal keep 100% they get the $16. 7M. 16. 7+13. 4+13. 4 = 83. 7 As of right now the digital run has yielded $83. 7M for its first 19 days on PVOD. Compare that to the first Trolls first 19 days which was $60. 4M studio revenue if you take 50% of the $120. 86M made 19 days into its run. $258M - $83. 7M = How much more it needs to break even So right now Trolls World Tour is $174. 3M in the red rn. But we have to remember its Digital run is far from over and TWT has yet to be released on Blu-ray and DVD where the market for it is also very strong. Next I will predict TWT total revenue after predicted DVD, Blu-ray, & TV sales using Deadline's Box Score formula and we'll see if there's a possibility of making a profit; PVOD Revenue: $127. 17M PVOD Revenue After 20% Vendor Share: $106. 2M DVD & Blu-ray Revenue: $50M Worldwide Home Entertainment: $156. 2M Global TV: $125M Total Revenues: $281. 2M Net Production Cost: $95M Promotion & Advertising: $90M Video Costs: $25M Participation: $10M Residuals: $18M Interest: $20M Total Cost: $258M Studio Net Profit: $23. 2M.
