In Asia # 1109Nov 2009 Lisa Perrotti-Brown 94 Drink: 2009 - 2020 $72-$93 Pale+ ruby-brick colour. Intense aromas of berries bursting with ripeness, kirsch, licorice, underbrush and fresh cigars. The palate is still youthful with tons of juicy warm cherry fruit countered by a refreshing backbone of high acidity and a firm level of finely grained tannins. A nice combination of power and refinement in perfect harmony. Long spicy finish. Drink now to 2020+. Tasted June 2009. In the Cellar # G7May 2006 Antonio Galloni 94 Drink: 2009 - 2020 $72-$93 1999 Barolo San Rocco-Dark ruby. Exuding much richness and youthfulness, the San Rocco offers a heady, ethereal nose with suggestions of spices, sweet toasted oak and white truffles. As it sits in the glass, it opens to reveal gorgeous layers of vibrant sweet dark fruit, licorice, and menthol nuances that coat the palate with exceptional elegance and length It should drink well to age 20 and perhaps beyond. One of the vintage's great wines. 94/drink after 2009, 03/06 It is no secret that one of the aims of the modernist school is to make more accessible Barolos, but perhaps no one has succeeded in making wines that drink as well in their youths as Luigi Scavino. These are among my favorite Barolos for their wide drinking windows as they are wines that can often be enjoyed upon release. Although Bricco Fiasco is Scavino's better known vineyard, readers should not ignore the San Rocco which is a beautiful modern-styled expression of Barolo from Serralunga. In the Cellar # G3,4Jul 2005 Antonio Galloni 92 Drink: 2007 $72-$93 1999 Barolo San Rocco-Saturated dark ruby. Exotic nose of truffles, menthol, leather, and roasted coffee beans. The extroverted 1999 San Rocco offers waves of sweet dark fruit that coat the palate, with superb length and a beautiful balsamic note on the finish. With some air this is drinking beautifully right now. Recent bottles of the 1998 and 2000 have also been outstanding. 92 points/drink after 2007, tasted 05/05 Luigi Scavino may be less well known than some of his more famous neighbors, but make no mistake about it, the wines from Scavino's estate Azelia can hold their own with the very best of the region. The wines here combine power and elegance with a level of virtuosity matched by few in the region. Although the wines show much extraction and oak influence, there can be no doubt that the overall balance and sense of proportion of these wines is excellent. "My dream is to make a wine that is great today, but that will be even better in 10 years and in 20 years," says Scavino. Azelia produces three Barolos, a normale, plus single vineyard selections from the Bricco Fiasco and San Rocco (also known as Costabella) vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga respectively. In exceptional years a Riserva is also bottled. Fermentations are carried out in rotary fermenters and last 8-10 days, after which the wines are aged in barriques of which typically 40% are new for the single vineyard wines, while the normale sees only used barriques. Speaking of his 2001s Scavino says "I prefer 2001 to 2000, it was a vintage with less heat, so the wines are fresher and more typical...more ‘Piedmontese' if you will." Wine Advocate # 149Oct 2003 Daniel Thomases 92 Drink: 2005 - 2020 $72-$93 (71) The 1999 Barolo San Rocco, from a vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, is the most complete of the trio. Ruby/garnet, it is the most expressive in its fruit, with ample plum and black cherry notes, well endowed with the classic asphalt and anisette aromas of Nebbiolo, and has absorbed its oak with greater success. Powerful and concentrated yet well balanced on the palate, its solid structure and firm texture are complemented by the velvet of the tactile sensations and the sweetness of the fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020.
