Tuesday night in Arlington saw the Texas Rangers triumph 7-4, beating the New York Yankees with closer Clay Holmes blowing his 11th save of the year and allowing a walk-off grand slam. With the loss, the Yankees' record plummeted to 80-59, 0.5 games behind the Baltimore Orioles in the close AL East battle after they had won earlier in the evening.

The Game: A Tale of Missed Opportunities and Costly Mistakes

The Yankees started the game off well thanks to a brilliant outing by Carlos Rodon in the mound. Throughout the first three innings, the left-hander shut out four batters without giving up a hit. Rodon was virtually unhittable, ending his outing with a season-high 11 strikeouts over six innings while giving up just one run on one hit and two walks. This came in spite of him giving up a solo home run to Josh Jung in the fourth inning.

But after Rodon left, the Yankees bullpen struggled. Tommy Kahnle pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but the Rangers' comeback was made possible by a string of errors on defense in the eighth. DJ LeMahieu, making his way back into the starting order after a short break, allowed the leadoff hitter to reach with a chopper up the first base line. Due to Gleyber Torres's defensive placement, Marcus Semien was able to take advantage of a space on the right side with a poor grounder, allowing two runners to advance with no outs.

The Yankees led 4-3 at the end of the eighth inning, despite a heroic effort to limit the damage that included pinching in Jake Cousins and Tim Hill to stem the flow.

The Ninth Inning Collapse: Holmes' Struggles Continue

The entire "Holmes experience"—a combination of groundouts, walks, and a failure to produce when it mattered most—was the ninth inning. Wyatt Langford had a loaded lineup after Holmes recorded the first out, gave up a single to Carson Kelly, and then walked Tommy Smith and Marcus Semien consecutively.

Holmes could not break free from the congestion, even though he had already botched ten saves this season. A 3-2 slider that hung over the plate was smashed by Langford, who entered the game 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, and sent the ball 407 feet into the left-field seats for a walk-off grand slam.

Strong Outing for Rodon Was Wasted

For the Yankees, it was a painful finale to a game that had started out promisingly. At his finest, Rodon tossed 99 pitches (66 strikes), giving up just one run on one hit and two walks. Eleven strikeouts in an excellent outing were eclipsed by the collapse of the bullpen.
