I wanted to like this film, as I do like Jack Nicholson and although the trailer was uninspiring on the whole I was intrigued in a way. How Do You Know had its moments, but for me it didn't work. It's redeeming qualities come from some beguiling filming and scenery, a nice soundtrack and two good performances from Paul Rudd and Kathryn Hahn, particularly Rudd. The story for starters is very plodding and predictable, with an ending you can smell a mile off, while neither the comedic and romantic aspects work, few of the comedic moments feel natural and the romantic moments are stilted both in pace and flow of the dialogue. The direction(coming from a director with a hit-and-miss resume) is rather characterless and I could not properly connect to the characters, Witherspoon's especially annoyed me. Aside from Rudd and Hahn, the other acting fails to make an impression. Owen Wilson has some likable moments but overdoes it so he comes across as a jerk too much. Jack Nicholson was disappointing, he is a great actor but he looks tired and seems disengaged. It doesn't help that nothing is done to make his character memorable, performance and script-wise, he feels like he's there for the sake of a plot device. Even with my disappointment with Nicholson, it is very little compared to Reese Witherspoon who never seems comfortable in this movie and the whole performance seems forced. All in all, disappointing. 4/10 Bethany Cox.

I haven't walked out of a movie since the abomination that was 'The Next Best Thing' ten years ago. That was the first and only time a movie has been so appalling that I've had no other option than to flee. Tonight I came as close as I have ever been to walk out No. 2.

I was getting lost in the beauty of the visuals and the music. Then got even more excited to see the TOMA characters! I can't wait to see more.

It is this open-minded attitude that has caused me to spend the last 2 hours watching 'How Do You Know.' A brief plot summary: Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) is in a bit of an emotional state after being dropped from the national women's softball team. She's having a bit of no-strings fun with Matty (Owen Wilson) a major league baseball star and all-round playboy. Lisa is also set up on a blind date with George (Paul Rudd) a businessman who is being investigated by the FBI over some kind of fraud. George's father and boss, Charles (Jack Nicholson) is tied into the same investigation and coincidentally lives in the same building as Matty. The inevitable love triangle follows.
