stop short of doing (...をしない、...するまでには至らない、あやうくしそうになる)

このコラムでは、
stop short of は「~するまでには至らない(その少し手前で踏みとどまる)」と説明されています。
I stopped short of telling him what I really felt about him.
私は、彼のことを本当はどう思ったかについて言わなかった。

「~するまでに至らない,~まではしない」。本人の意思であるかどうかは別として,何らかの事情か衝動で,またはその場の成り行きなどで,という場合に使うことが多い。
