  What do you think about soap?

  To tell you the truth, I had and have no special interest in soap. I remember the women in my workplace often talked about cosmetics during working hours when I was in my twenties. Of course, I pretended not to be listening to that. I think ladies in her 30 or more are much concerned about their skin conditions all the time, making every effort to achieve the best. I said in my heart, yes deeply, otherwise I would have been killed on the spot, “Hey, It is too late, isn’t it? The new stuff you’re trying will have no effect, right? No longer gentleman sees you as a woman, yes at least me. Stop wasting time and concentrate on your work right now.”(I don’t mean to be rude to you all ladies, greatly sorry, I was too young to have much consideration for you at that time. Of course I now think it’s better to enjoy everything in your daily life to make you change)On media such as TV, Women in senior age now look much younger than they were decade ago. They keep fresh appearance for their age. Though I think aging may have its value, we should accept rather than deny or ignore it, if you look beautiful, stylish, and sophisticated, I greatly welcome as a man.

• Long time No see!

  It's been long time since I wrote the diary last time.Although I was not busy working, I was reluctant to report my recent days.The other day, I remembered being told that if I want to help people from abroad with PC, it would be better to check the bulletin board at the International Exchange Center.So I dropped in at the center, and had a close look at messages.Aside from many asking to be a friend, I soon noticed the one calling for help with PC.I came into contact with him, he was a Bangladeshi. On the phone he told me that he would like to be a programmer, and want to get a job here in Japan.But he didn't know how to write source code, furthermore he couldn't so much as tell what Java script was.I heard one of his friend told him it would be easy to get a job if he had a good skill related to computer.After about two hours of my lecture, we parted promising we soon meet again. I recommend to him he should read a book on C++ or Java, after he has finished it, he would rethink whether he could be a programmer.I only hope he would be successful in his first trial!

• cats and dogs (but I don't mean that saying)

  Every time I call on client's house, there is a lot of fun. Today, I will talk about their pets.Most have cats or dogs. It seems that the animals like to see visiter, whenever I arrive at the door, they come over to me as if they greet me by saying Hello! And then they “tell”me the way to the PC client use.(at least It seems to me!)They never leave me alone, especially dogs do, while I walking around the room finding where telephone, FTTH terminal or LAN port on the wall is, they always follow me.I remember that when I was trying to find where ISDN TA in the client's house, since what I was looking for seemed to be placed behind a big fax machine, I had to lean over it and look below. Then in order to keep balance, I raised one of my legs, then a small dog clung to it,wagging its tail with pleasure! Every time I did that, he did it too! The way he clung to my leg was very cute!Cats also interest me.They show interest in what I have and what I do.When I am about to set out to work, they are always with me, sniffing my bag and licking it. When I ping the remote host, PC shows its results in the black window,cats gaze at it. I like to stroke them while windows is restarting.

• puzzle

  Win 98 has often troubled me.Strictly speaking, it was not win 98 but machines on which win 98 was installed that troubled me.When win 98 user wants to connect to the internet, in most cases, LAN board or card is required. I have seen not a few win 98 machines with no ethernet port.but now I have to face trouble and solve some puzzle!A few kinds of machines made by Sony, Fujitu have a complicating structure of itself, where a lot of devices are arranged, set, attached in such a small space. so when I want to attach the ethernet board to the Bus slot, before it, I have to remove memory card, so many guards and cover. It is like a Rubik cube.In addition, I have to put my hand in very narrow space between devices and hard shell. Devices and modules are arranged and assembled like a difficult puzzle. Today I had much difficulties in restoring after I set the board on PC.Once I took PC apart, I could not imagine how three major parts should be assembled. Now Time began when I tried the puzzle.After struggling, I managed to rebuild the PC.To be honest, I felf relieved because I thought I could never.I was completely tired from solving puzzule.

• an aged client

  Today I had a bit hard time.You may imagine that I had technical trouble in my job as a network engineer.But it was not the case. I can call it human error. As usual, I was asked to set up the internet connection by a client.He is an old doctor. His office is placed close to his house.He subscribes ADSL line, the connector is attached in the dining room, while his office has no RJ11 connector led to ADSL line.The client uses the PC in his office where he saw his patients.Of course, it requires the wireless connection in order to connect to the internet on his PC.So I set the wireless router with ADSL modem in the dining room. Two sites are far away from each other. I was afraid it happened that the wireless connection could not be established. But there was no problem.After setting, when I was going back to my office, I recieved a call from my office, which said that the client made a call to my office, complained that he could not see the web site. and he also said that he got something I left in his house. Wondering what I left in his house, I made a call to him.THe clinet “Come back again right now, I have a trouble in my PC.”Me “I see. but I heard I left something in your house, would you tell me what it is? ”The client “That's like a card. something you have attached to my PC. I think it is yours. You have to come back to get it back.”Me　“Excuse me, sir. that's yours. as I explained, the wireless run card is used to connect to the internet. Unless you use it, you can not see the web site. ”The client “OK, I understood. ”Me “I suppose since you have removed the device from the PC, you cannot browse the web site.”The client “Oh, I see. but if you use the card port for the device, I cannot stab another card.”Me“Do you have to use another PCI card?”The client “Yes, I do for the digital camera connection ”Me “Well, I suppose your PC has two PCI card slots, so you can use both.”THe client “No. the wireless card has a projection on one side, so I cannot stab another.”Me “Well, I have no choice but to go back to your house, and see what it happens. Please wait 15 minutes or more.”On the line, I could not solve this complicating(?) problem, I had to return. Of course, as you know, it was solved in no time after my arrival.When the wireless card is slotted into the upper with a projection side upward, the other card is attached to the lower, we could make it!

• Network setting in my house

  I'll introduce my home network setting today.I mainly use win Me, and win 2003 server for data storage and back-up.My win 2003 server is on Express 5800 NEC, while Me is on laptop machine.I use this Me-laptop on the desk.(note, which does't mean that I use laptop PC on the desktop machine!)My win 2003 has no console monitor, so, as you may know, I installed Remote Desk Top client software on win Me, and console win 2003 on it.In addition, I want to place the server machine in other room, since it is making a big noise.There is some reasons why I use this setting.First, my win Me sometimes gets out of order, hang up, so I feel anxious about when it will crash and all the data on it will vanish! That's why I prepared win server.Second, my win Me has run short of its memory. therefore, It will soon hang up, especially, When I use Word, IE and Excel at the same time.Whenever it happens, I get very irritated!!So, in order to avoid this trouble, I switch two machines according to my work, for instance, I use the win Me machine browsing World Wide Web, while I type documents and fill the excel forms on server 2003 machine. Of course, lack of adequate memory often causes the printer job to hang up.So, I decided to command and execute the printer job on server. This is not uncommon. But in my home setting, the printer is locally connected to win Me, because putting the printer within my reach is convenient.(remember the server is in other room), of course I know a printer server unit will solve this problem diffrently, but I cannot afford it.When I need to print out some documets, I use server,not Me, though I console the server on Me. OH! I'm confused! I can hardly tell which is which!? You see?In short, the printer job excuted on server is sent to Me. Me operates as printer server, where the printer data is past to printer.

• hurdle for the handicapped in PC use

  Today, I'm going to talk about the interface. What can you think of from this word?If you are a programer, develper, you can imagine the one related to the OSI model. but I now mean the human interface.I once taught the handicapped PC operation. They couldn't use their hands freely, so working with a mouse could not be easy.Of course, some are making efforts to handle it, for instance, with stick holded by their mouth, but I think we should have more devices that help them with PC operation.Anyway, The client I met today had a handicap in his eye sight.He had installed a text reading software on his PC.As soon as you get browser working, the program begin reading all the text on the web site. It spoke so fast that I could hardly understand what it said. Furthermore, It read out every text down to the link URL embedded, it required more skill to be with it. Despite some defects on software, he operated his PC with confident hand, which surprised me a lot.I suddenly recalled that my colleague, a web designer said that the web sites adopting the help system for the handicapped are yet scarce, so the Japanese have yet to understand the barrier free notion.I think Internet is now vital particularly to those people. but,the human interface we always use without problems, such as track point, slide pad, mouse or even keybords can prevent them from access their PC. I hope more useful devices will be developed for them all.

• good skill needed

  The other day I called on a customer, who came from England.He asked me to set up internet connection.His PC was Mac, OS X.To be honest, I was not familiar with it, at first, I felt a little upset, but he had a router, instead of using PPPoE on Mac, I had only to build configuration on the router. I felt relieved. Of course, I was done with ease.Anyway, he was very interesting, having a lot to talk about with me, I was bombarded with many questions! One of his questions was something like this.While in England more people are still using old PC, for instance Win 98, Why do the Japanese like to buy a new one?As you know, even many Japanese are still in use of Win 98. I now suppose he meant that British people habitually (or historically?) like to use, keep old stuff, how about the Japanese? But at that moment, I couldn't catch on to the meaning of the question clearly.I answered to the effect that the Japanese tend to see PC as household appliances, like TV, radio and cooler, calling for easy operation, I think Win XP is better in accessibility and handling than Win 98, So they prefer buying a new one. Looking back my own statement, I think it is not to the point.I strongly feel I have to be with more skilled English.

• HIKARI phone?

  I suppose it is difficult to understand its difference between VOIP services numbered by 050-XXXX and HIKARI phone by, for example, 022-XXXX.Today I heard about it for the first time. The latter service has started since March 1st, 2005. Hikari phone requires B-flets broad band connection infra.What's the difference?In short, 050- session by VOIP has advantage that those who subscribe the same ISP can dial each other for free. but Hikari phone can not. While 050 cannot connect to 110, 119 emergency number, Hikari can.But I think now more people use the mobile phone, so at home-fixed phone may no longer be welcome.I hope new service will call me.

• Why can't I get through?

  It was IP Phone settings that troubled me.There was something strange about it.I'll tell you the whole about it.I was asked to set the configuration on Router for the FTTH Internet connection. After setting, PPP LED tuned on, then I got down to set VOIPsetting, actually, I only downloaded its configuration from ISP Web sitethrough UPnP(universal plug and play). of course, its LED turned on, too.I was sure I had got my work almost done. so the only thing I had to do was to check Internet connection by I.E. and VOIP phone connection.No problem in the Internet browsing, but strangely, the VOIP session failed. even though I tried several times.So I decided to find the cause of this trouble. Check points were as follows.1.Check the type of connection between router and the phone receiver. Auto detection was on on the router, while on the phone side, PB dialing mode was set to on. These settings would enable these devices to communicate with each other without problem, I thought.2. I suspected ISP had not yet registered the user ID and password on VOIP server. At first, I thought the cause of this trouble lay on the ISP side. but soon realized that I successfully downloaded the VOIP configuration through UPnP on router, It suggested that we got authenticated.So, There was mystery left. Now, you may wonder why I didn't ask the support for help, of course, I did! I called them over and over again.But I couldn't get through to any operator at all, even though I tried for almost two hours! The most terrible thing was that as soon as the line got connected, then an auto answering machine told me the line was busy, call us again after a while, and then suddenly I was shut down!After all, I could't find any cause. I explained to the customer what to do next, leaving the house. I had a hard time of it!

• A stray dog

  Today the number of visits hit 1000! It took nearly 3 months.You wonder if I am glad to see this hits, to tell the truth, it does't make any differnce to me at all. I just felt like writting down here.By the way, the other day when we had much more snow, I was forced to take trains to get out to work. I usually ride on a bike. At Kitayama station on Senzan line, Sendai, a big dog wandered into the platform, where there were many passengers waiting for the train.Getting out of breath, it followed anyone walking around.An old woman with her grandchild looked scared, “I'm scared! It's too dangerous. Is there anyone who can take it out of here? ”No one answered. The dog was still going around, walking and running.A boy, who looked like a college student, suddenly shouted.“Come on! come here! I'm gonna play with you! This way, Good boy!” He started to run followed by the dog.I saw the boy and the dog going away from the station, when train was coming.He was going to get on the train, he was in a hurry to come back.The dog, too!The car rushed into the track, everyone got on board. We left the station,saying good-bye to the dog.
